Rock Church, Helsinki

4.2
#2 of 1,400 in Things to do in Finland
Known for its striking copper dome, Rock Church has been carved from rock in the heart of the city. Designed by siblings Tim and Tuomo Suomalainen and finished in 1969, this distinctive Lutheran church is directly excavated into rock. Explore the church's interior, which consists of rock and marble walls, with the shining copper dome supported by concrete beams at the top of the structure. Note the light shining in through the skylight on what is commonly called the Church of Rock. Take time to listen to the acoustics, made possible by the church's exposed walls. Rock Church is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Helsinki Edition.

  • Quiet, very nice, Nice. Here I want to stay longer. Just sit in relative silence (especially if there are no crowds of Chinese tourists with their endless selfi). The present Scandinavian design exactly restrained and beautiful. Very very beautiful. Find very simply. There is a cute shop with souvenirs.

  • Church of the rock surprises: that they will charge input, then change the timetable. However, even though 3 euro per visitor, here is good. The wall, which left channels from mortgaged dynamite, impressive as it was the first time. A large number of Chinese tourists with children.

  • This is a totally original and beautiful church. It costs only 3 euros to go inside and you can take a look around, sit down and, if you're lucky, enjoy some music. It's just such an unusual architect...  more »

  • Best place in the whole Helsinki, and I'm not religious. When you go inside this church you feel like you're entering another dimension. Relaxing and astonishing at the same time.
  • Nice beautiful church in the Rock, very different concept of the church, very well designed. From outside it's just like a rock, within this rock a very different church. Never seen such kind of a church. You can take tram from the city center to the nearest station and then 2 minutes walk to church. Local transportation is very easy in Helsinki, for stations you can always visit HSL website to get itenary, it is very helpful and easy. Great experience about the church, a must visit in Helsinki. Entrance fees is 3 Euro per person.
  • An awesome church, even for non believers like me. Minimal but full of light even on a gloomy day, modern and relaxing. It's hard to believe it is 48 years old! Feels so contemporary! Only €3 to get in, a great pit stop to relax, sit down, take pictures and continue your trip to explore Helsinki!
  • Really nice and really different from most churches you would see! There's an entrance fee. But if you go on Friday after 3pm you get in fro free
  • An architecturally very special church, and completely unique in the world. An architecturally very special church, and completely unique in the world. A quiet haven in the city is well worth a visit even for those who are not normally interested in churches.

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
