Pihlajasaari Recreational Park, Helsinki

4.6
#4 of 45 in Nature in Finland
At Pihlajasaari Recreational Park you can swim at sandy beaches or jog and hike through wooded areas. This island was once a villa resort with small cottages scattered throughout its forests and seafronts. Today the 26 hectare (64 acre) site attracts sun worshipers and active vacationers from all over the country. Visit the beach by boat and spend a day surrounded by diverse wildlife and colorful cottages, or swim in the clear sea. You can also camp at a designated area. If you're hungry, visit the restaurant inside a 19th-century wooden villa for some smoked Finnish salmon. Really beautiful island so close to the city with a proper beach and view into the outer archipelago.

Excellent little island where is sandy and rocky beaches to swin and have sunbath. One restaurant to eat and drink. This bigger island is connected to smaller island with bridge where is nudist beach.

Very few tourists here, so you can enjoy nature in silence. There's a huge beach (with warnings about blue algae when we went there), a few bbq spots and a restaurant with few but delicious meals. I love it here.

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
