  • This museum has the particularity that it gives much information with images. It allows us to know graphically and with good explanations the chronology of Finland and know that 5 decades ago the country was prosperous, but quite the opposite.

  • Very large and open spaces, nice architecture. I was impressed by the diversity and richness of artefacts, some of them displayed in a modern and proactive manner. Very friendly staff.  more »
  • It was a very big and beautiful museum. It was free between 4pm to 6pm (the last two visiting hours) on first Friday of the month. It's near to Parliament House, the museum of contemporary arts.  more »

  • A spectacular and content-rich museum, well-worth the time and inexpensive entrance fee. In the basement is a profoundly Nordic take on the prehistory of the Finnish and Scandinavian region. It uses impressive technologies in innovative ways to illustrate Finland’s place in the larger context of global prehistory. The following floor exhibits medieval times in Finland, along with the rise of Christianity and the Russian/Swedish monarchies. The top floor takes an honest, yet optimistic look at modern history and Finland’s contributions to modern society.
  • The Finnish National museum is a nice place to visit especially on a rainy or cold day. The permanent collection takes you around the building and gives you a good understanding of the Finnish history and if you do it in a leisurely pace it will take you around an hour. There is also an exhibition about public and hidden Finnish facts and facets, there is also a small exhibition called the arctic spirit displaying Inuit art. Well worth a visit and it is only a 15 minute walk from the central station.
  • The National Museum of Finland is located in the central of Helsinki. This is a place where you can learn the history from the stone ages to nowadays. The descriptions are in Finnish and English ... And may be also in Swedish. So, as a traveller, I am able to enjoy the Finnish History!
  • The museum is a mix of archeology and history, but definitely worth a visit. It is also free of charge every Friday after 4pm, except for the temporary exhibitions (which are great as well)
  • Beautiful building. Interesting updated permanent exhibitions plus temporary thematic exhibitions. All information available in Fin. Swe and En

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
