Market Square Kauppatori, Helsinki

#3 of 168 in Shopping in Finland
Flea Market · Hidden Gem · Landmark
Find fresh seafood, moose meat, and authentic Finnish souvenirs at Market Square Kauppatori. Nestled on the Baltic shore at the hearth of Helsinki, the market is also a departure point for ferry cruises to nearby islands. This popular tourist destination and shopping location bustles with activity from spring to autumn, with the October herring market being the highlight of the season. Try salmon soup with rye bread or "lihapiirakka," a traditional Finnish meat pastry, at one of the many outdoor cafes. Watch for hungry seagulls while you're eating, as they've been known to take food from unsuspecting tourists. • The glistening of the cobblestones is light enough to trick you into a bygone era. Or else almost enough. I love this market place. The stalls and the chatter as tourists catch a ferry or search out a meal. A beautiful centre of the city and a place I found myself drawn to again and again while in Helsinki.
  • Great little market! We had a lot of fun looking at the local shops and local food. It's small but located right by the centre and by the water, a very nice place for a photo. We had some delicious traditional fish soup at one of the little cafes.
  • Right on the ocean is a commercial shopping center that has many of the products for which Finland is famous. Don’t bypass some of the smaller vendors and you’ll be delighted to find some very unusual and interesting products— many unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else. I was intrigued by the reindeer sausage and rose petal jam, as well as the flavored salts, all of which I purchased. There was a public bath which turned out to be very popular with Helsinki’s younger crowd of working people, who evidently found it relaxing to enjoy an hot springs bath situated in the actual nearly freezing ocean.
  • Beautiful hall with excellent architecture and they have made sure to not over commercialize it despite of it's large no of tourist visitors. Great place to get your breakfast or lunch fix and if you like salmon, you will LOVE this hall. Walk around and then nibble at a few places. Definitely should be in your list of places to visit in Helsinki
  • It is a smaller market with some beautiful stalls. The food served is good. The produce stalls sell locally harvested goods as well as imported, but it is clearly marked. Going in August/early September meant fresh berries and mushrooms. Also, the jewelry was quite nice. Overall it was a relaxed market vibe, that while small, was very adequate and blended extremely well with the surroundings.
