Mannerheim Museum, Helsinki

4.5
#7 of 37 in Museums in Helsinki
Historic Site Specialty Museum
Learn about the life of a military hero and statesman at Mannerheim Museum, once the home of its namesake. Poised on a hill above an upscale residential neighborhood, the museum displays the artifacts of Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, whose precarious childhood led to an interesting life in the military fighting for Russia and later against Russia. His education by experience is reflected in the many objects brought back from distant places as well as the broad range of subject matter represented in his library. The house is in its original state, with furniture and decor from Mannerheim's own collection, while the exhibits display medals and honors he earned. You can also view his extensive book collection and family portraits. Notice Mannerheim's uncomfortable-looking bed, where he kept strict sleeping rituals. • It's an intimate museum--the home of Marshal Mannerheim. He grew up in a bankrupt Swedish noble family, went to be a soldier in Russia and rose to the rank of Major General in the Tsar's army. He trav...  more »
  • We took part in a guided tour, it took a long time, a lot of. Marshal's life-cycle came to visit. If the topic is of interest then please visit the Museum.

  • The Mannerheim Museum unexpectedly interesting. I was struck by the mix of gentility and asceticism. Tour Guide (English-language) was in love with Marshal, but the Russian period of his life knew a very mediocre.

  • Because Mannerheim is the most important finish figure oficialmente 20th century.
  • The visit of the museum consists in a guided tour (12€). Very well-done and really interesting, about the life and acts of Mannerheim but also the more global history of Finland from its independancy. Definitively worth it.
  • Great place and important piece of history
  • Fascinating museum. Absolutely bizarre character who hoarded a lot of items from his travels across the east. House is much as he left it in the fifties. Was pleased to get an English speaking guide (although I didn't understand a lot of what he said) but the experience was a little short at €10 for one hour. Highly recommend a visit though.
  • Very good tutorial.

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
