Kauppatori, Helsinki
(4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
The Market Square is a central square in Helsinki, Finland, and one of the most famous market places and tourist attractions in the city. The Market Square is located near the centre of Helsinki, at the eastern end of Esplanadi and bordering the Baltic Sea to the south and Katajanokka to the east. The Helsinki City Transport maintains an all-year-round ferry link from the Market Square to Suomenlinna, and in the summer there are also private companies providing ferry cruises, both to Suomenlinna and other nearby islands. From spring to autumn, the Market Square is bustling with activity with vendors selling fresh Finnish food and souvenirs. There are also many outdoor cafés at the square. Some cafés also provide meat pastries, and one advertises their pastries as being "the best in the Market Square… in Helsinki… in Finland!"The height of the square's popularity is in early October when the annual Helsinki herring market begins.A long tradition at the Market Square is a display of old American cars on the first Friday of every month. Any motorist with an interest in old American cars can take part in this display. How the tradition originally started is unclear.

  • Other areas that one must not forget to visit is Kauppatori, the market square in the city's port area. From here depart daily ferries to Suommenlina, a fortress of medieval and declared world heritage by the UNESCO what I liked most is the market which is located in the plaza and is open air. In the different stands, we can find from souvenirs to food typical Finnish. In my case, I chose to try a cream with Pink salmon and boiled potatoes soup. A delight! Like all markets, it is an excellent place to learn a bit more about the culture of the country. It is open from 06 to 6 pm except Thursday and Friday.

  • The market square you can enjoy coffee and doughnuts or meat pie in the tent cafes, fish, buy ice cream, fresh fish, fruits, berries and vegetables. Crafts, jewelry, and if the jonkinmoiset products are here in the trade of goods. At the beginning of October, there will be held the herring market, where the fishermen arrive in boats across the Gulf of Finland with its own products. Square can be reached by boat to Suomenlinna (HKL) and many of the other islands in Africa (Korkeasaari Zoo, Lonna, etc.) -Next to the market square is a market Hall, where you can go grocery shopping or nourishment.

  • Quaint and picturesque although, honestly, I was expecting something more typical. There are many stalls with crafts and land with stratospheric prices sometimes (see the fruits) but lots of stalls and souvenir from China but with prices "Nordics". Disappointed by the stalls offering street food: go for the anchovies and salmon stew with potatoes but what about paella? If you want to enjoy local specialities at affordable prices (for the average of Helsinki) better head to the market Hall.

  • Really cool old city market with lot of possibilities to eat. Great plus for me is that you can pay by card pretty much in every stand at the market. (no cash required)
  • Good open square with steps where you can relax while enjoying the summer view. Central and convenient for the tram, this is a tourist hotspot.
  • I guess you don't really need to read a review to visit this place once in Helsinki. It's a nice open market with seasonal grocery and some local craft. There are also some stalls offering food and your should try the salmon there. Don't forget to also visit the covered market next to this!
  • Main market at Helsinki, bit touristy though. Can see top politicians here, even president, having cup of coffee
  • A nice place to pick up a few souvenirs or some snacks. Surrounded by an area with Engel's neoclassical architecture, the presidential castle and many tourist oriented businesses. Prices are high-ish. Suomenlinna and other ferries have their harbors here.
