Kamppi Chapel of Silence, Helsinki

4.3
Savor a moment of quiet reflection or prayer inside the contemporary Kamppi Chapel of Silence. While it seems to contradict its surroundings, this site is nicknamed the "Chapel of Silence." Built on one of the busiest streets in Helsinki, the chapel provides a calming atmosphere inside a tranquil space positioned in an otherwise hectic area. Step inside the chapel, which welcomes people of all faiths. Examine the contemporary architecture, designed as a part of the World Design Capital program of 2012 by Kimmo Lintula, Niko Sirola, and Mikko Summanen. • Easily traceable, the chapel is at least singular, located in a large square, in front of a huge shopping mall. Detail the shape and the building material. Completely wooden both externally and inside, in its absolute simplicity, with a sense of serenity and tranquility. In fact, the chapel was designed to be a place of recollection and prayer for all religions and, perhaps, achieved the goal. You don't pay to visit.

  • In the very busy point of the Finnish capital surprises us modern, curved but and warming urban space building. It is a sacral structure, completely ecumenical, open to all, regardless of religion or descent. The chapel is carried out jointly by the Protestant Church and the city of Helsinki. It consists of two interconnected buildings. In one, less spectacular, there are entrances, there is an exhibition space, also the clergymen and social workers are ready to carry all sorts of help. The second one that draws our attention is the proper chapel. The exterior façade is covered with sprout boards protected by special wax. They create a warm impression. The interior, which has to calm us and separate from the rushing next to the world, is finished with an Alchola tree and equipped with wooden furniture and a futuristic altar. It is a delicate space, economical, with no sharp edges, emanating calm and emits guests. An example of a beautiful and wise architecture devoted to peace and quiet. Maybe we'll hear something that can't be louder than a whisper.

  • Must visit for travelers and those who are seeking peace. Contemporary architectural design mostly made out of Finnish wood. You will really find peace once you enter in. There is a street market right outside of this modern church but after going inside it's completely quiet.
  • The place has been built with a lovely idea. It provides help and support to those who need it. This was my personal favourite in Helsinki trip. Inside the chapel is a very quiet place for some peace and reflection. Interesting architecture as well !!!
  • A must see when visiting Helsinki. This chapel is located in the middle of a busy square in downtown Helsinki. Yet, when you get inside, you will not hear a thing. The style of the chapel is inspiring. The ambiance is welcoming and serene. A great place to escape from reality for a few minutes and relax. When we visited there was no one inside, so we were able to enjoy the silence for a few minutes.
  • Contrarily to other churches these days who are money-making machines for tourists, this tiny chapel was built with a legitimate and beautiful purpose. It is intended to be a “refuge” in the city and it provides support and help to anyone who needs it. You can go in for a meditative session, a break to organize your thoughts or even have an anonymous conversation with a staff member if you need to talk. All for free.
  • Built in a busy street in Helsinki City centre, this is a refuge of tranquility. Although as it is a tourist attraction with free entry, the peace is hard come by, with doors opening and closing and people fidgeting. Once it settles (like a pond free of ripples) the silence is absolutely worth the wait.
