Helsinki Zoo, Helsinki

(3.7/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Since it was established in 1889, Helsinki Zoo has attracted tourists and animal lovers for more than a century. The zoo's rocky island location attracts as much awe as the animals here; in fact, the island was a national park and used for fishing in 1569 until the establishment of the zoo in the 19th century. Discover this quiet spot removed from the city center where you can view over 150 animal species and 1,000 types of plants. Walk through the site's popular cat valley and get to know the exotic creatures at one of Europe's oldest zoos. A visit to Helsinki Zoo represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Helsinki family vacation planner to plot your vacation.

  • We did it in the middle of winter. I have to admit that the ride should have been passed, why it was very cold. I had opened a restaurant. Luckily animals were not all saved or died of cold. You have some closed places that are very cute or visit them

  • A nice zoo, not the biggest in the world but its location on an island in touching distance of downtown Helsinki is great. I've been in the summer and the winter. Both are good but I most enjoyed in t...  more »
  • Super beautiful environment where this is located, not a whole lot in Zoo animals, but what they have is definitely worth it, and that for only 12 euros. Especially the feline are easily seen and are very well worth the effort. But also to view and photograph the elk are good.

  • One of the nicest zoos we have ever been to. It's not that big, but it has very interesting and beautiful animals, like snow leopards and very rare Amur leopards and Amur tigers. The location on an island is very beautiful and calm. The animals don't seem to mind the visitors, since they come very close to the glass-walls of their enclosures. The restaurant at the bear-enclosure has good food and is very family-friendly. But what impressed us the most was the friendly zoo-staff. One of the zookeepers gave us one and a half hour of her time and answered every question we had about the snow leopards, the works as a zoo-keeper and the zoo in general. We want to warmly recommend this great and beautiful place to everyone who visits Helsinki and is interested in animals, because this zoo really does the city of Helsinki proud. With greetings and best wishes from Austria, two very impressed and happy visitors
  • Great zoo, as they say entire world on one island. Animals are well taken care of, this is quite evident. Many interaction possibilities, such as seeing monkeys real close. Also even several really good playgrounds and also many great picnic spots.
  • Decent size, mostly Arctic animals. A small tropical area. Situated on an island. Get bus tickets before hand or have change for bus, there is no Atm and restaurants/stores won't do cash back. There is also a new bridge now.
  • The zoo is not very large or super-exotic, but is organized extremely well on it's own island. Green, nice walks, reasonable grouping and explanations. Come by boat and don't forget to scale the tower.
  • Korkeasaari zoo has a very relaxed atmosphere and it's a great place spend your day. Best visits are in summertime, but Korkeasaari is open 364 days (closed on Christmas eve) of the year and has different activities for each season.
