Torshavn Cathedral, Torshavn

Visible from miles away, Torshavn Cathedral impresses with its bright white walls and slated roof dating back to 1788. The Evangelical-Lutheran community has expanded the church over the years, but preserved the 1647 altarpiece standing on the north wall--don't miss this excellent piece of craftsmanship, depicting the Last Supper across a surface of 1 sq m (10.8 sq ft). Also look for the 18th-century bell, lavishly decorated by palmettes and a crowned emblem of The Danish East India Company--a reminder of Denmark's efforts to tame the North. • Open the after noon, the Cathedral is a very sober decoration. It is close to the port, and the houses on tinganes.

  • Listen to the chimes at noon if you get a chance. Organ practice when I visited so that probably made it nicer than when it's just quiet. Spartan but it has a nice ceiling and friendly staff.

Where to stay in Streymoy

Although small villages usually have some available rooms with commendable service, the island's capital--Torshavn--offers the most options, ranging from 4-star hotels to guesthouses and lodges. Most hotels are situated in the city center near the harbor, but you can also find comfortable rooms on the town's western outskirts. Some parts of the island offer good camping sites, decent alternatives for adventurous outdoorsy types.
