The Nordic House, Torshavn

#4 of 60 in Things to do in Faroe Islands
Landmark Tourist Spot
Admire the Scandinavian architecture at The Nordic House, considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the Nordic region. With a mission to promote the local history and culture, the institution was established in 1983 under the supervision of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Designed by architect Ola Steen, the deep green building resembles a dragon on the outside, matching the reptilian design of the spacious interior hall. Sit back at the onsite cafe and soak in the playful atmosphere of the architectural elements, whose materials were sourced almost exclusively from the Faroe Islands. The Nordic House is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Streymoy Edition.

Where to stay in Streymoy

Although small villages usually have some available rooms with commendable service, the island's capital--Torshavn--offers the most options, ranging from 4-star hotels to guesthouses and lodges. Most hotels are situated in the city center near the harbor, but you can also find comfortable rooms on the town's western outskirts. Some parts of the island offer good camping sites, decent alternatives for adventurous outdoorsy types.

  • A trendy cultural nordic house with a small café and free WiFi. Events, plays and concerts can take place here according to schedules, so keep an eye on it.
  • Simply a nice hotel in front of the traditional harbor of the Faroese capital.
  • Nice cultural space. Not too much going on when I visited but presumably it's used lots by the locals.
  • Local or tourist, it's always a pleasure to visit.
  • Smakka cafe is just a kiosk in the center; not very good
