Christianskirkjan, Klaksvik

#1 of 7 in Things to do in Bordhoy
Considered one of the most striking buildings in the whole country, Christianskirkjan represents both a modern architectural achievement and a favorite religious site for the worshipers. The idea behind the construction was to create a landmark that would reflect the culture and history of the country. As a result, it was built out of natural basalt and wood, and topped with the traditional sod roof typical for Scandinavian buildings. Inside, you'll see a Faroese boat hanging from the ceiling, a celebrated altarpiece dating from 1901, a rose window designed by Ulrikke Marseen, and a number of other decorations and icons of carved wood. With our international travel planner, Bordhoy attractions like Christianskirkjan can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

It is worth taking a detour to see this church. Very beautiful design both inside and outside, where it looks like both houses to the fjord. Joakim SKOVGAARD's altarpiece is beautiful and a study in itself. See also the exciting wood tables in the basement done by waste wood of Jesus ' life.

We had a nice visit in the Church where we were lucky enough to follow the lectures of a Norwegian group in the Church. Interesting story about the Church, the Faroese people and the many challenges the Faroese have ever faced. Highly recommended as activity, if there should come a little rain shower over.
