Kirkjubour Cathedral, Kirkjubour

4.2
#4 of 20 in Historic Sites in Faroe Islands
Church Tourist Spot
Hike up the hill to Kirkjubour Cathedral, reputedly the largest medieval building on the islands. The 1300 church lacks a roof, which is nothing new: in fact, the building was never completed. Still, poking around here will reveal lots of details about ancient architecture and construction. Pause to take in the views of the rest of the island, as well as other smaller islands nearby. Take a look at our Streymoy travel itinerary maker to schedule your visit to Kirkjubour Cathedral and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

Where to stay in Streymoy

Although small villages usually have some available rooms with commendable service, the island's capital--Torshavn--offers the most options, ranging from 4-star hotels to guesthouses and lodges. Most hotels are situated in the city center near the harbor, but you can also find comfortable rooms on the town's western outskirts. Some parts of the island offer good camping sites, decent alternatives for adventurous outdoorsy types.
