A center of history and culture in the capital, National Museum of Ethiopia charts not just Ethiopia's, but humankind's ancient legacy. Established in 1958 from the country's archaeology institution, the museum now sprawls across three floors, presenting many of the nation's artistic collection, alongside ancient relics of some of the first known-hominids and ethnological artifacts from across the centuries. Don't miss the main exhibit, "Lucy", showcasing casts of the skeleton of a 3.2 million-year-old female hominid discovered in the 1970s to worldwide acclaim. English-speaking guides are available. • Museum itself is not so special but respect the effort. Lucy was nice to see and the floor with local art was definitely worth seeing.  more »

  • Excellent museum in Addis Ababa that is cheap to enter. Expect to find historical artifacts from the Ethiopian Empire and bones from the hominid Lucy ~3.9 million years ago. They also have an Olmec head donated from Mexico. Amazing that the originals are on display with minimal security and there are priceless paintings on the top level with no glass protection
  • Loved my time here and the fact that I got to see Lucy was amazing! The staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable! Not very expensive to visit either.
  • If you visit Addis you should also see the National Museum. Not very big and with some parts not well illuminated compared to European standard, but interesting to understand better the Ethiopian history. I specially liked the prehistorical part with a lot of info and of course Lucy.
  • Really worth going to. The entrance had an excellent summary of Ethiopian history, and then a great exhibit upstairs on the various tribes and their cultural differences. The musical instrument exhibit was well done. It seemed like good information on the history of religious painting I was in overload by that time. Take a flashlight as electricity is erratic and at low levels in some areas.
  • The museum is small. I only saw the lower and first floors. The artifacts are few, and the descriptions indicate that many items were recouped after being taken out of the country. How disturbing! Just a taste of what should be. Google stolen Ethiopia artifacts and you'll see what I mean
