University of Tartu, Tartu

4.7
In addition to checking in as one of Northern Europe's oldest institutions, University of Tartu is Estonia's best and most well-regarded. Founded by Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus in 1632, the university today represents a hotbed of research and education in the country. You can explore the campus's 100 buildings that support more than 18,000 students. You'll find that the main building serves as one of Tartu's main attractions thanks to its classical architecture reminiscent of Greece, complete with triangular facade and sizeable columns. Be sure to pay a visit to one of the four different museums managed by the institution, including its own museum of history. • Although the current Estonian authorities and trying to prove that the University of Tartu dates back to Swedish provincial school Academia Under, its real founder is Russian Emperor Alexander the first, by his father Paul's intention to First establish a higher educational institution in the province plans to noble youth had the opportunity to study at home and not to travel abroad in universities. Choosing between two cities with University traditions (c Dorpat competed Jelgava, where there was created the Duke of Bishop Peter Bironom Academia Petrina), Imperial Government settled on the jestljandskom option for more dry climate and availability of food. In truth, Dorpat on 300 versts closer to Petersburg than Jelgava (now Jelgava).

  • University of Tartu is mother (or alma mater if you wish) of The Great Spirit of Tartu. Everything here is connected to this.
  • Alma mater. What more to say. Oh, yes. There the students used to crack up on a joke back in 18th century that there will be a day when all the lectures and real studywork will be moved out of the main building and it will be used just for administration.. Well, post-2012 it's not a joke any more :( Still, the building is magnificent.

Where to stay in Tartu

As a university town, Tartu can get rowdy in the evenings. To ensure a quiet night's stay, look for more economical lodging outside of the center. That said, if you want to be in the thick of the nightlife, the center itself has quite a few budget accommodations catering to the youthful population. Unfortunately, this also means that those looking for luxury hotels in this area may be more hard-pressed. The most populous neighborhood in the city is Annelinn, bordering the Emajogi River, where you will find a variety of accommodations. Alternatively, Kesklinn, a smaller quarter, has plenty of mid-range hotels and budget guesthouses.
