University of Tartu, Tartu
(4.7/5 based on 85 reviews on the web)
In addition to checking in as one of Northern Europe's oldest institutions, University of Tartu is Estonia's best and most well-regarded. Founded by Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus in 1632, the university today represents a hotbed of research and education in the country. You can explore the campus's 100 buildings that support more than 18,000 students. You'll find that the main building serves as one of Tartu's main attractions thanks to its classical architecture reminiscent of Greece, complete with triangular facade and sizeable columns. Be sure to pay a visit to one of the four different museums managed by the institution, including its own museum of history. Put University of Tartu into our Tartu trip itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The University is important, the most meaningful place in Tartu, which provides here the influx of smart and young. Tartu (Dorpat) University gave the world many famous scientists: Vasily Struve-Geodesy and astronomy (graduated from, oddly enough, philology), Karl von Baer (zoology and Embryology), the surgeon Nikolay Pirogov, recipient of the Nobel Prize in chemistry, Wilhelm Ostwald, founder of zoosemiotics Jakob Ikskjul' and, of course, Franco Juri Lotman. Here he worked as a famous linguist Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, editor of 3 and 4-th Edition of the dictionary of Dal, reaching there selected vocabulary. He graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Lenin's brother Dmitri Ulyanov. Like all universities Tartu geographically distributed. On the main street of the city Uelikooli is situated in the main building. At the top of the Hill-the Observatory.

  • Tartu is a student city. 20 percent of residents of the city are Tartu university students. It is 17 century's university. The building is very beautiful from outside as well as from inside. It looks ...  more »
  • Imposing building exterior, gives the picture of how it was supposed to be a University. Flowers, bicycles, capitals and in General a picture of optimism. Very close to the central square, is worth a visit

  • Alma mater. What more to say. Oh, yes. There the students used to crack up on a joke back in 18th century that there will be a day when all the lectures and real studywork will be moved out of the main building and it will be used just for administration.. Well, post-2012 it's not a joke any more :( Still, the building is magnificent.
