Tartu Town Hall Square, Tartu
(4.9/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Home to a neoclassical municipal building and much of the town's activity, Tartu Town Hall Square represents the historical heart of the city. Surrounded by classical houses and shops, the square plays home to a famous local statue depicting two love-struck students kissing atop a fountain. Wander the area and you'll find remnants of the bustling activity that once took place here, ranging from craft markets to the many cafes lining the plaza. Don't miss the so-called "leaning house" on one side of the square or listening in to the town hall's bells ringing through the air. Keep a close eye out and you'll be able to spot the Soviet hammer-and-sickle crest adorning some of the buildings, signs that these are actually post-World War II reconstructions rather than originals. • Town Hall Square during our visit was ready for Christmas. Right in the center of the square stands a gorgeous huge tree. Local kids already hung on it their letters to Santa Claus/Santa Claus. Here is located the cosy Christmas meadow, where the local kids had fun ...

  • A required attribute of the medieval city. Tartu Town Hall square less than Tallinn and bigger than, for example, Pärnu. It is difficult to imagine a typical Estonian town without Town Hall square.
