Tartu Town Hall Square, Tartu

(4.9/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
Home to a neoclassical municipal building and much of the town's activity, Tartu Town Hall Square represents the historical heart of the city. Surrounded by classical houses and shops, the square plays home to a famous local statue depicting two love-struck students kissing atop a fountain. Wander the area and you'll find remnants of the bustling activity that once took place here, ranging from craft markets to the many cafes lining the plaza. Don't miss the so-called "leaning house" on one side of the square or listening in to the town hall's bells ringing through the air. Keep a close eye out and you'll be able to spot the Soviet hammer-and-sickle crest adorning some of the buildings, signs that these are actually post-World War II reconstructions rather than originals. Work out when and for how long to visit Tartu Town Hall Square and other Tartu attractions using our handy Tartu holiday planner.

  • Beautiful square and especially nice in the Christmas time with all the lights, a huge Christmas tree, an outdoor café which serves hot drinks and wafers, swings to sit on.
  • Have walked about the old city on the eve of new year 2017. Rastushjovyval square is decorated with lights. All good but the snow very much.
