Tartu Town Hall Square, Tartu

Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.8/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web
Home to a neoclassical municipal building and much of the town's activity, Tartu Town Hall Square represents the historical heart of the city. Surrounded by classical houses and shops, the square plays home to a famous local statue depicting two love-struck students kissing atop a fountain. Wander the area and you'll find remnants of the bustling activity that once took place here, ranging from craft markets to the many cafes lining the plaza. Don't miss the so-called "leaning house" on one side of the square or listening in to the town hall's bells ringing through the air. Keep a close eye out and you'll be able to spot the Soviet hammer-and-sickle crest adorning some of the buildings, signs that these are actually post-World War II reconstructions rather than originals. • The Town Hall square is where is located the fountain with the statue of students kissing under an umbrella. The Centre is pedestrian and you can stroll peacefully, there are plenty of bars and restaurants. In this square is the City Hall and on one side of the ground floor is the information office, where you can take planes and information both from Tartu and the complete province and maps of Estonia.

  • It is the center of the old town, so all the main sites are located nearby. Beautiful buildings on the square (note that some of them are completely tilted).
  • Perfectly place for an evening stroll. On the square are many good cafes, where you can spend an evening not bad!
