Sculpture Bronze Pig, Tartu

3.6
#13 of 86 in Things to do in Tartu
Aptly located near the market, Sculpture Bronze Pig is a charming reminder of several things. First, the pig is the city's symbol of prosperity. On a more practical level, the market sells pork--hence the typical cuts of pork engraved and listed on one side of the statue. The smiling pig was brought to the square in 2008 and is meant to help new butchers with cutting meat properly. If you look closely, you may also find another meaning here: it smiles standing atop an overturned wooden tub--a typical basin where the animal is placed after slaughter. • Saw from afar this monument does not understand anything. Like this bronze pig stands next to the local market. If Yes, then obviously this is in memory of her many peers, semi finished and sold at this location in different kinds and subsequently eaten. These are the unhappy Association. In the ranking of popularity of the pig is just above and just below the spirit Hill Historical Museum, Tartu University. What's that supposed to mean?

  • Iconic piggy in front of newly renovated market. The car park is locally named after the pig. Great view to the river and nice walk too.  more »
  • Fun place. Small parking in front of the entrance with a part line. Very popular on Saturday morning. Selection of different smoked/cured sausages and salespeople are very nice.

Where to stay in Tartu

As a university town, Tartu can get rowdy in the evenings. To ensure a quiet night's stay, look for more economical lodging outside of the center. That said, if you want to be in the thick of the nightlife, the center itself has quite a few budget accommodations catering to the youthful population. Unfortunately, this also means that those looking for luxury hotels in this area may be more hard-pressed. The most populous neighborhood in the city is Annelinn, bordering the Emajogi River, where you will find a variety of accommodations. Alternatively, Kesklinn, a smaller quarter, has plenty of mid-range hotels and budget guesthouses.
