Viru Gates, Tallinn

4.3
#16 of 57 in Sightseeing in Tallinn
Landmark Tourist Spot
Step right into the heart of Tallinn's urban center and access the city's historical sights from Viru Gates. The square connects all of the city's major roads and main public transportation lines, and it's a gateway to the old town. Throughout history the square was the city's main gathering place and the center of activity. Reconstruction at the beginning of the 20th century transformed the area into a transportation and shopping hub. Apart from visiting an array of stores, you can stop by a bar or restaurant for refreshment or a fine meal. Browse the surrounding area for a selection of souvenirs and be sure to visit some of the flower shops that the neighborhood is famous for. Work out when and for how long to visit Viru Gates and other Tallinn attractions using our handy Tallinn travel itinerary planner.

  • The Viru gates mark the main entrance to Tallinn's old town, and as such, the area is very busy. The gates make a nice introduction to medieval Tallinn, but as you explore the city, you'll find better...  more »
  • The best way to start and end the day is walking through the beautiful flower market to get to Old Town...of course it was the most direct route from our hotel. The flowers are beautiful and the tower...  more »
  • Laying as it is on the direct access between our Hotel and the Old City this imposing entrance holds out the promise of what is immediately to behold. It does not disappoint!  more »

  • Very nice gate between the newer and older sections of the city. (Here is where the tourist trap begins.) It is worthy to note that in less than a square kilometer, Tallinn has the newest of buildings and midieval buildings and everything in between. It is quite an amazing place. This gate is a symbol of this diversity.
  • Really good meeting point if you want to go out in the old town.
  • Well maintained gateway to Old Town. Gives you a sense of the history of Tallinn. Stalls are setup to buy fresh flowers.
  • Beautiful place. Historical. Nice atmosphere
  • Beautiful entrance to the Old Town. Macdonalds, Hesburger and flower market nearby.
