Viru Gates, Tallinn

(4.3/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Step right into the heart of Tallinn's urban center and access the city's historical sights from Viru Gates. The square connects all of the city's major roads and main public transportation lines, and it's a gateway to the old town. Throughout history the square was the city's main gathering place and the center of activity. Reconstruction at the beginning of the 20th century transformed the area into a transportation and shopping hub. Apart from visiting an array of stores, you can stop by a bar or restaurant for refreshment or a fine meal. Browse the surrounding area for a selection of souvenirs and be sure to visit some of the flower shops that the neighborhood is famous for. Work out when and for how long to visit Viru Gates and other Tallinn attractions using our handy Tallinn travel itinerary planner.

  • Ancient medieval gate that separates the old town from the modern one. Outside the gate of a small shopping area, many sellers of flowers, on the Viru shopping centre and modern city. These gates as the border between the past and the present. Very beautiful place

  • Gateway to the Old-town. Looks good and maintained well until now. One of the famous spots to take a selfie ;)
  • Beautiful view of street and best place to buy some flowers
  • It's the beautiful entry gate to the Old Town of Tallinn. It dates back to 1345! On the left hand side (before entering the Old Town) you will spot a line of flower stalls, with very reasonable prices compared to the regular flower shops in town. On the other side, there's a McDonald's, the first to open in Estonia and the only one you'll find in Old Town.
  • Tallinn old town, if you are first time here, must see place 👍
  • Enter through the gates and go find out why Tallinn is so special.
