Patarei Sea Fortress Prison, Tallinn

4.0
Originally constructed as a base for coastal artillery, Patarei Sea Fortress Prison was later repurposed and today represents one of the darkest examples of a Soviet-era incarceration facility. You can visit the complex, now a historical park and public area, and explore its battered hallways and run-down cells. You'll find that much of the prison has been left untouched since its closure in 2004, giving you a sense of the fear and repressive atmosphere that once festered here. Join a guided tour, which you can arrange in advance via e-mail, to gain more in-depth knowledge about the sights, history, and legends of the prison. Though not for the faint-hearted, you can participate in a three-hour tour, during which you'll be subjected to a mock incarceration followed by a meal. • A part of the prison had been reopened with an exposition about communism and the horrors that went on in the prison. It's a very intriguing exposition that can keep you occupied for a few hours. And....  more »
  • We came across this museum by chance. This gives a very detailed explanation of what the Estonian people suffered under Soviet Union. There are many stories from inmates - quite shocking. I would.....  more »

  • For some this might be difficult to get through, but it was very interesting for me. I really enjoy different history things and learning about the ins and outs as much as possible. This was really interesting for me.
  • You get the expected eerie feeling when visiting prison cells and reading about the life and death of the convicted people and history here. If you're into that sort of thing, why not pay a visit. I guess the 5 euro price is about right for what you can see.
  • For 5 euros it's well worth a visit. Maybe a little light on historical facts, but lots of personal tales that are very meaningful. Shame someone graffitied all over it in magic marker with things like "the guard sat here".
  • We only visited the entrance gate, and were greeted by a grumpy woman who might have been a leftover Russian prison guard. She was in charge of selling tickets for the "exhibition". We told her that were not particularly interested in an exhibition, and only wanted to see the buildings. There were three gates next to the entrance booth. The one on the left had a arrow with "Exhibition" in it. So we walked to the gate on the right. The ticket woman started to yell at us and ran out of the booth after us. She shouted hysterically that the gate on the right was the exhibition. We were worried that we would end up in the prison and ran for our lives.
  • The visit to the prison was really astonishing, there are a lot of informations about Communism and all the people incarcerated, also all the different rooms with the different cardboards with the explanations were super interesting. Is a good way of understanding the years during the Russian invasion and how a small country like Estonia had to deal with it.
