Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta), Tallinn

4.1
#11 of 53 in Museums in Tallinn
Standing as an imposing guard at one of the entrances to the old city of Tallinn, Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta)--as it's lovingly known--represents the largest single piece of the town's surviving fortifications. Stop by the tower, which is part of the Estonian Maritime Museum, and examine its massive walls, standing 20 m (66 ft) high and measuring 5 m (16.5 ft) thick in some places. Wander the halls of the 16th-century defensive structure and you'll be treated to a chronological look at Estonia's maritime history. Be sure to climb up to the tower's roof, where you'll be rewarded with a sweeping view of the sea and the surrounding historical center. Great and exciting building with an interesting history, which today contains a maritime museum which is well worth watching, as well as the restaurant on the roof with a breathtaking view. Must see, in Tallinn:-)
