Dominican St. Catherine's Monastery Claustrum, Tallinn

(70+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Historic Site
Tour the medieval Dominican St. Catherine's Monastery Claustrum to see dormitories, living quarters, and a library where generations of monks spent their lives through the centuries. Stroll along hallways where your voice echoes in the darkness and eerie Gothic statues hide in corners, then visit the large chapel with its crumbling brick walls. In the cellar of the complex lies a mysterious pillar: legend says it possesses forces that elevate you to a higher spiritual state and bring good health to those who come near it. If you're interested, the staff can organize thematic tours and programs at the site, which involve storytelling, costumes, and lit torches throughout the monastery's medieval walls. Using our international travel planner, Tallinn attractions like Dominican St. Catherine's Monastery Claustrum can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • The entry charge is quite small but there's not much to see except for some very dark rooms. If in a hurry you can probably skip seeing the inside and restrict you visit to the small court yard.  more »
  • If you are walking between the lower and upper town in Tallinn sooner or later you will pass through the narrow gateway near to the old Monastry. Great views and a feeling of History  more »
  • The convent is actually down a steep set of stairs. The main function of the space is to sell art, otherwise it's an interesting place to peek you head, walk around and move on.  more »

  • Very interesting courtyard. See how the monks lived
  • St. Catherina's monastery is one of the remaining internal parts have been built in 1246 .... Thought to be a source of mental and physical health "columns" should be seen.
