Joya de Ceren Archaeological Park, San Salvador

#2 of 17 in Historic Sites in El Salvador
Learn about the daily life of the pre-Columbian Mayan culture at Joya de Ceren Archaeological Park, a World Heritage Site displaying a well-preserved farming village. The 590 CE eruption of a nearby volcano covered the village in 14 layers of ash. While experts believe all the villagers had time to flee, they left behind many of their belongings, including utensils, furniture, and even half-eaten food. The ash kept artifacts and architecture remarkably intact, earning the site the nickname "Pompeii of the Americas." • Many times I think that all we have wondered as our ancestors, lived like they were your things, which were their routines, etc. Then I tell them that in this place you know and apart you will see how they lived, as their homes were distributed. It is one of the places that you can't miss in El Salvador

  • Only several of the rooms are open now. Others for restoration. But it's a must visit. The Pompeii of the Americas.  more »

  • Joya de Ceren is a great window in time to ancient Mayan living. It is preserved well like Pompeii. I recommend adding this UNESCO site to any trip!
  • This place is amazing I would go back anytime. I love archeological museums. Everything is well explain, organized you get to go around the site is big and very well keep, they have an small cafeteria with fresh food. Also they have a souvenir shop. Is a bit far from San Salvador but is worthy to travel the almost 2 hr. A taxi charge us $60 for the day and we stop in 3 different touristic areas no rush just enjoying our day.
  • A little bit small site. But beautiful paths. Good gift shop and snacks
  • Loved this place. The museum was amazing. It provides you lots of good information. The archeological area is beautiful and well managed. You can spend a lot of time walking around learning a lot. They also a little market area right outside were can find a lot of nick nacks. Make sure to haggle the prices. Most of the times I was able to reduce the original price between 50 to 75%.
  • I read that this place was the Pompeii of the Americas, the place cannot be more far from that description. It is a small site with 3 areas of a Mayan little town covered in volcanic ashes. It is worth the trip. 3 USD for foreigners. There is tons of birds in this site.
