At the end of the 19TH century the then Bishop of San Salvador, Dr. Antonio Adolfo Pérez and Aguilar, thought to erect in the capital, a basilica of the sacred heart-the 1st of January 1901 was blessed with great solemnity the laying of the first stone-1917 the basilica was under construction and the earthquake of June 7, opened it in its central part. The parishioners not only collaborated on its restoration but also to conclude part of its construction-the basilica of the sacred heart, has withstood several earthquakes on June 7, 1917, April 1919, may 1965, 1986 October- and the of the year 2001-from 1989, the basilica of the Sacred Heart served as (interim) Metropolitan Cathedral where it performed activities and liturgies of the Archdiocese , this due to the fact that Cathedral was in the final stage of construction.
