Chorros de la Calera, Juayua

4.5
#1 of 9 in Things to do in Sonsonate Department
Hire a guide to take you down to the manmade falls at Chorros de la Calera. Built to provide power for the nearby town, and utilizing the volcanic aspects of the area, the falls are set in dense forest. After your walk, cool off and bathe beneath the shower of water. The uneven terrain demands strong and sturdy footwear. Note that robbery has been reported here; bring a reliable local guide as the area is not attended by officials. • The waterfalls are easily accessible and offer the opportunity to refresh yourself in the cool waters next to the (really) little hike. Who is reasonably well on foot, should definitely abandon the tuktuk and start instead rather early in the morning to 8 o'clock (firstly, it is still not so hot, and secondly you have then own the pools for himself). I have the trip Guide (hostel anahuac) made ($5), what is not actually necessary (we ran on a small path near the road, which was not spectacular but maybe more beautiful than the road). To support the tourism there, it certainly was the right decision. Time approx. 3 hours.

  • We were on a weekend there. You can go with a tuk tuk or run down. Both are a matter of very dusty. At the two waterfalls, you can swim, swim. The water is very clean and refreshing.

  • An assailant wielding a machete attacked and robbed my friend and I when returning from the chorros. The trail is unsafe unless you go with a group and request armed guard escort from the local police...  more »

  • Amazing, simply breathtaking. Water felt sooooo cold but fresh. Had to hike about ten minutes to get there. Definitely recommend to leave your car in town and rent a moto taxi for about $6 both ways. If you try to book a tour it's about $10 per person. We only made it to the second waterfall, a local said that going to the third one was a bit riskier and was way further down.
  • An excellent place to interact with nature. There is a tunnel at the waterfall. If you get in there little bit and see the water facing the entrance, you see the water more beautifully. It's deep blue. It's just amazing.
  • Beautiful waterfall, great to swim in
  • Great place
  • The place is a dream... The only downside is as it is free access to the public at times there are people why they don't care the place... But with good attitude, it is impossible not to enjoy the place is just beautiful... On the other hand I think that lack enough maintenance to the place and take into account that if they want to carry some older person would be a little difficult to access for them
