A World Heritage Site, Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids once provided the final resting place for the pharaohs and nobles of Memphis. The ensemble of pyramids and mastabas (tombs made of mud bricks) covers a huge area of the desert--this site was used as a burial ground for around 3,000 years. The main structures include the Pyramid of Djoser, constructed by the royal architect Imhotep--it's possibly the oldest intact stone building in the world. • Just incredible.. Smaller than the great pyramid, but no less impressive... Definitely worth a trip outside of Cairo!
  • Having tea with the caretaker at the Step Pyramid of Djoser in 1982 looking towards the great pyramids in the background . There was nothing there at the time and I took a horse across the sand to get to it as there was no road. Definitely a step back in time.
  • Was fortunate enough to come during the pandemic and we were practically the only people there. Once in a lifetime opportunity for photos.
  • Taking a ride to see the pyramid of Djoser is worth it. I could spent hours here trying to imagine how this place was in ancient times. There is a small version of what you would expect if you were to go inside the great pyramid, so if your claustrophobic, the tomb here is a way shorter example. This place was also way less crowded than Giza. Beautiful place that should be in everyones list.
  • The first Egyptian pyramid consists of six terraces built on top of one another, which represents a tremendous development in the design of tombs in that era, which was limited to a single balcony. The height of the graduated pyramid of Zoser is 62 meters (203 feet), with a base of 109 mx 125 m (358 ft x 410 ft) and covered with polished white limestone. The stepped pyramid is considered the first stone structure at the time.
