A World Heritage Site, Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids once provided the final resting place for the pharaohs and nobles of Memphis. The ensemble of pyramids and mastabas (tombs made of mud bricks) covers a huge area of the desert--this site was used as a burial ground for around 3,000 years. The main structures include the Pyramid of Djoser, constructed by the royal architect Imhotep--it's possibly the oldest intact stone building in the world. • Djoser’s Step Pyramid at Saqqara is one of the most important archeological sites in all of Egypt. While it may not be as impressive or as famous as the Giza Pyramids, this structure predates them.  more »

  • Would definitely recommend working this into your itinerary if you can! The step pyramid here is even older than the one at Giza. So fascinating and well preserved  more »

  • Just incredible.. Smaller than the great pyramid, but no less impressive... Definitely worth a trip outside of Cairo!
  • Having tea with the caretaker at the Step Pyramid of Djoser in 1982 looking towards the great pyramids in the background . There was nothing there at the time and I took a horse across the sand to get to it as there was no road. Definitely a step back in time.
  • This was a much better experience than the Pyramid(s) of Giza. Here there are only a few of the people trying to sell souvenirs and once you tell them no thanks, they back off. It was really amazing to walk into the Pyramid and view the structure and ancient workmanship. We moved around and saw the other tomb (of ibat?) as well as the other ruins that are close by.
  • It's an awesome place. When we visited whole place was for ourselves, thanks to Covid, you will get awesome pictures here. Just lookout for guards or the local sellers and be careful. They look over friendly but they are good at making you buy things which you don't need. Also if a guard is clicking your photo you gotta tip him.
  • Super exciting site! So many things to see, very historically rich.
