Great Sphinx, Giza

Must see · Monument · Historic Site
Undeniably one of the most iconic structures of the ancient world, Great Sphinx, a monumental sculpture depicting the mythical creature with the body of a lion and a human head, continues to overlook the surrounding landscape with a discerning gaze. Carved out of the bedrock, also used for the building of the nearby pyramids, the structure is 73 m (238 ft) long and 20.21 m (66.3 ft) high, measurements that make it one of the largest statues in the world. Most modern scholars believe it was built around 2500 BCE, with the face modeled on the pharaoh Khafra, whose tomb, the second pyramid of Giza, lies close by on the plateau. • Still so very impressive even though I've seen it several times. Fun to get the various comedic photos. Just an awesome sight!  more »
  • It was a breathtaking experience! Unlike the pyramids where there are a large number of local vendors, there were none here so the experience was even better. Be sure to visit!  more »
  • My husband and I were actually able to stand between the paws of the Sphinx. It was massive and truly impressive even with the nose broken off!  more »

  • I attended the Sound & Light show on Thursday night at 9 pm (Arabic language) it was amazing the weather was perfect but the script itself needs some modifications. I really enjoyed it first time to visit the pyramids by night and definitely won't be the last
  • Land of mysteries. Photograph of the Great Sphinx located on the Giza plateau, Egypt. Buried for the most of its life in the desert sand, an air of mystery has always surrounded the Great Sphinx, causing speculation about its age and purpose, method of construction, concealed chambers, role in prophecy and relationship to the equally mysterious pyramids. However, today the great statue is crumbling because of wind, humidity and the smog from Cairo. The Great Sphinx still hasn’t given up it’s secrets as nowadays the focus is on preservation rather than further explorations or excavations.
  • One of those must see sights of Egypt and after seeing on TV and in films for so long was fantastic to check it out in person. Some queues and busy times but that’s no big deal It’s a little smaller than you would imagine and years of decay has seen the Sphinx wearing away but even so it’s truly a must see relic of ancient Egypt.
  • Must see place. In the evening u can enjoy light and music show. It's not very great but tells u history and culture of Egyptian society. Vary famous for photo and movie shoots. Lot of souvenir shops are around. Negotiate well before purchasing.
  • Amazing. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Not as large as I expected from photographs. It's actually quite small and would be easy to climb up if you were allowed to. There is plenty to see in the area. The great pyramids are a short walk away. A vendor area nearby for gifts and drinks. Well worth a stop if you are already visiting the pyramids.
