Temple of Horus, Edfu

Must see · Ruin · Tourist Spot
Probably the country's best preserved ancient site, Temple of Horus was commissioned by Ptolemy III in 237 BCE and finished almost two centuries later. The imposing temple owes its intact condition to silt and sand, which largely covered the structure until its excavation in the 19th century. Exploring the temple chambers, you'll encounter grandiose columns, detailed reliefs on the walls, and statues of Horus, the falcon god that was worshipped in the shrine. On a guided tour of the site, you'll learn more about the story of Horus, the temple's history, and the hieroglyphic inscriptions that adorn the structure. • Huge temple, does get very crowded though. You have to take a horse carriage to get to it which is a fun experience. I suggest going with a guide to fully enjoy the temple.
  • Edfu Temple, home to the mighty Egyptian Falcon God Horus - son of Osiris God and the Goddess of Isis. Known as the God of Kings, protector of the pharaohs. Also my all-time favorite Egyptian pharaoh 😍 So-so amazed with this magnificent shrine that I had to #stopdropandyoga before the rest of the tourists arrived 😁🧘‍♂️
  • Visited this temple dedicated to the falcon God Horus, during our third day aboard nile cruise. You need to get a horse carriage to get to the temple. This is not ancient as other temples in Egypt, but definitely worth a visit !!
  • It's a must see. If you pass from Assuan to Luxor stop by and check out this temple. I know it's 2000 years younger than the other tempels. Still it's in great shape. And it really alows you to imagine how other tempels looked like when not that destroyed. Edfu itself is a nice town. So stop for a night. Check out local market. And people out of major touristic places. The are super nice.
  • Love the stories behind each statue or writing on the wall❤
