Unfinished Obelisk, Aswan

Ruin · Historic Site
Consider the scale of ambition of those who worked on Unfinished Obelisk, the largest known obelisk of the ancient world. If finished, the obelisk would have stood at around 42 m (137 ft) tall. Carved directly from the bedrock, the project was abandoned when the obelisk began to crack. As you marvel at the artwork, evocative just as much for its incompleteness as it is for its scale, notice the tool marks left by ancient carvers. • Interesting piece of history. It's pretty awesome to see unfinished work that gives insights into how Egyptians made their obelisks. Alien theories be damned. Place is small and can be finished within 15 minutes
  • It was an amazing experience here! First, they showed us an English video of how the Obelisks were made and a brief background about this unfinished one. They've also kept there a few stones, the likes of which were used back then to carve out the Obelisks (we can take it in hand and get the try to get the real experience of how the actual work would have looked like back then!) which were used as tools to carve out.
  • This one is a bit difficult to admire aa it's just an unfinished structure, although the mastery involved in shaping this huge structure with limited tools at that time is still a matter of amazement. Do climb to the top for a clear view of the unfinished obelisk .
  • Good to see how the big piece of stone was selected for making the obelisk but it is certainly not the highlight of things to see in Egypt.
  • Not a great deal to see here at the former granite quarry, other than the incomplete obelisk. The high points of the quarry offer good views over Aswan. Wear sensible footwear as the granite underfoot can be slippery.
