Fort Qaitbey, Alexandria

Historic Site · Tourist Spot
An impressive example of medieval military architecture, Fort Qaitbey overlooks the city's harbor. Built in the 1480s, the fortress was designed to provide protection from crusaders arriving by sea--today it offers extensive views of the Mediterranean and the city it was built to defend. The fort allegedly stands on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the now-gone Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A visit to Fort Qaitbey represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Alexandria road trip planning app to plot your vacation.

  • Good old place, but the visitors not the best people
  • Liked it to feel the greatness and the engineering for old days and still standing for more than 600 years without any harm and how they managed it insides. Really amazing and the views above is really great. It is great to go for adults but for kids a little bit useless and the sun is so hot and may harm someone
  • Great place for a family trip. Wonderful construction with marvelous views. Be prepared for a lot of walking and climbing up the stairs. My family really enjoyed it.
  • It is an exciting place. You can watch different kinds of water animals and birds. It is also attractive within the citadel where you can see a very great style of architecture and design, besides enjoying the view of the see and Alexandria up there.
  • It's a nice historical piece of art with great Mediterranean view. But the place is empty, you end up staring at empty walls with not many educational signs. All other castles that I been to have been used as museums or have exhibitions. Also, unfortunately some rooms are being used as bathrooms by the visitors and they stink with urine.
