Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria

Art Museum · Library
Absorb the blend of ancient history and modern knowledge at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, an important library and strikingly designed cultural complex. Built in honor of the historically significant 3rd-century BCE library of the same name--whose burning represents an immense loss to contemporary cultural knowledge--the modern institution was inaugurated in 2002 with backing from UNESCO. Designed to resemble a rising sun, the library complex aspires to be a bastion of knowledge and learning like its ancient predecessor. Explore the entire complex, which includes four museums, gallery spaces for permanent and temporary exhibits, and a planetarium. • The highlight of our trip was going to be seeing the Library of Alexandria. The structure is an amazing sun disk representation surrounded by high delapedared buildings. It's looks so intimidating.....  more »
  • A wonderful and indescribable place. It was amazing to know this library. A large historical collection and a very beautiful and modern architecture in one place. Additionally, its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea makes it even more attractive. Highly recommend to all!
  • The building is primarily an actual library for Egyptian people with a massive catalogue of books and digital archives. However for a tourist it's only just an okay place. Many of the exhibits held inside require additional tickets on top of the entrance ticket, and they're rather underwhelming. There is a free exhibit on the late president Sadat which is worth a visit, as it honors a great man who did a lot of good for Egypt.
  • The library is wonderfully located on the seafront and the architecture itself is amazing. This new avatar, (that was opened in 2002) of the world famous old Bibliotheca Alexandrina, has done full justice to it's namesake. The building is shaped like a disc that is stuck in the ground. Much like a flying saucer that landed sideways on water and in trouble! The outside walls are made of granite and have carved on them, letters, symbols and hieroglyphics from 120 different scripts worldwide. It has 11 floors and huge sloping windows that are spectacular. The building is impressive, so much so, that I forgot to take any pictures inside! I gaped at the beauty of the gigantic main reading room which took full advantage of the light streaming through the big signature skylights. I was told that this room can house a mind boggling 8million books and seat 2500 people at a time. The sloping roof, takes full advantage of the natural sunlight, while still being able to block harmful rays that may affect the books. There are 4 separate libraries, a planetarium, 4 museums, a conference center, apart from a number of exhibits that are permanent as well as temporary. The library is a huge cultural Center and holds many international events and performances as well. Take at least half a day here. Everything is well organised, so it will be a day well spent.
  • A copy of every book published in the world is kept in the library, making it one of the great literary sites in the world. The library also houses several exhibitions relating to the history of Egypt and a display of rare antique books.
  • Good place to gain knowledge. Has many services including vr and machine learning platforms. Very interactive.
