Jumandi Caves, Tena

(3.6/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
Climb over dramatic waterfalls and pass through pools of cooling water to reach Jumandi Caves, named after the Ecuadorian hero who hid women and children in caves during the 16th-century Spanish invasions. Jumandi himself was found hiding in this cave by the Spanish and later executed in Quito. Enter the caves to see 3 m (9.8) tall stalagmites that have taken over 30 years to grow. Wear sturdy hiking shoes for the trek, bring a change of clothes or a swimsuit, and expect to get wet. Hiring a professional tour guide is required to visit. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Tena holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Jumandi Caves and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The caves (caves, in its true sense) are a very good thing. Exceptional! But not only good will makes failure to present such resource tourism. As well as it operated at the time of my visit (April 2016); their journey was really dangerous. Without light (only individual lanterns), without handrails, without a helmet... .obligando waiting to gather a minimum of p visitors travel, rather than ensure schedules, without that amount the minimum of visitors. Missing security measures and criteria of Organization for visits. Nothing that not you can solve with support official. The guides of the community kichwa are good. But they need to be trained, especially with the safety regulations. Batteries...! Yes we can!

  • The caves are interesting, and the guide is knowledgeable. You get a chance to go under a "healing" waterfall, touch a fertility rock, and see some bats. The view climbing out is also breathtaking. Ex...  more »
