Sangay National Park is a national park located in the Morona Santiago, Chimborazo and Tungurahua provinces of Ecuador. The park contains two active volcanoes, one extinct volcano El Altar, and ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforests to glaciers. The park has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. In 1992, it was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger due to illegal poaching, extensive grazing, unplanned road construction and encroachment of the park's perimeter. It was removed from the UNESCO list of endangered sites in 2005.FaunaThe National Park is an important refuge for rare species of the Andes, like mountain tapirs and spectacled bears. Especially for the mountain tapir, the park is one of the most important strongholds. Typical species of the alpine and subalpine areas are mountain tapirs, Northern South American cougars and Andean foxes. In the forests below live spectacled bears, giant otters, Ecuadorian jaguars, ocelots, margays, Brazilian tapirs, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus ustus), little red brocket deer and Northern Pudus. About 300-400 bird species inhabit the Park.

  • Road to get this place has great views, crosses a very important agricultural area. Went to Atillo Lagoons: beautiful place but lack of parking spaces, magnificent views. Environment in danger.  more »

  • What a wonderful place! The park is beautiful with its lakes, the indigenous people, the animals and especially the tranquility. It is nice to relax in the "beach" directly at the lake and enjoy the view and the sun (when it's shining). It is not so crowded and very clean as well. A special place with a wonderful atmosphere! I would always visit the park again when I'm close by!
  • Beautiful landscape and not yet overrun by tourist. We visited the park with a local guide from Alausí and came by car to take a walk at the beautiful lakes. The view of the mountains was breathtaking and the calmness of the place was amazing. Be sure to bring lunch so you can strengthen yourself after the hike but take your trash with you :)
  • This national park and volcano are so worth the effort to visit. The views are great. I found the sulfur deposits to be interesting.
  • Beautiful place, lack of parking spaces, magnificent views. Environment in danger.
  • Nice place!
