San Francisco Church (Iglesia de San Francisco), Quito

4.7
#4 of 42 in Historic Sites in Ecuador
Religious Site Architectural Building
Gape in wonder at the dazzling gold and ornate carvings adorning the interior of San Francisco Church (Iglesia de San Francisco). A crowning jewel of the central square, the church has stood for almost as long as Quito itself--construction started just weeks after the city was founded in 1534. Despite significant damage from earthquakes, the church's commanding facade and glorious interior remain in top condition thanks to tireless restoration work. Check out the attached courtyard, which features a ring of palm trees among its manicured gardens. San Francisco Church (Iglesia de San Francisco) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Quito Edition.

Where to stay in Quito

Most visitors to Quito choose to stay in La Mariscal, a touristy neighborhood filled with guesthouses, restaurants, and bars. This area is also the town's nightlife hub, drawing a young crowd of revelers from around the world. If you prefer less noise, look for a bed in La Foresta, a quieter and less crowded alternative just a few blocks away from popular entertainment opportunities. For upscale sleeping options head to the old town, boasting many of Quito's top hotels in some of its prettiest buildings.

  • Wonderful, amazing, pretty nice
  • A place that houses treasures representative of the culture of the city of Quito. Inside the convent of San Francisco is located which was, probably, the first cemetery of colonial Quito.

  • Church in the historic center of Quito's colonial architecture. Beautiful structure. Here the legend of Cantuña is developed.
