History Museum Specialty Museum
Perfectly complementing the city's historical hub, Museo de la Ciudad tells the story of Quito and its traditions, legends, and customs through displays of art, maps, and everyday objects. The museum occupies the city's oldest building, originally the San Juan de Dios Hospital, which dates back to the mid 16th century. Journey through the centuries and find out how the lives of the residents of this important trade point were influenced by the exchange of goods, languages, ideas, and beliefs. Inspect dioramas of a typical kitchen, pharmacy, and local shop. The exhibits cover the period from the indigenous people to the arrival of the Spaniards. Two terraces of the adjoined cafe offer a quiet break with a view of the historical part of the city. By using our Quito vacation trip planner, you can arrange your visit to Museo de la Ciudad and other attractions in Quito.

  • It's not very big and doesn't seem that popular, but I'm glad we went. The courtyard is very nice, and I liked the atmosphere.  more »

  • Simply put, I loved this museo. It is as the guidebooks say: "worthwhile". It's a mix of taking-you-back dioramas, cool historical facts, excellent art, and some religious paraphernalia. If you've fallen in love with Quito--as my wife and I have in our 6 months here--this is a place to come to to learn more about this incredible, historic city.
  • Tells the story of Ecuador from before the time of the Incas to the 20th century- very extensive and interesting historical exhibits. They also had a temporary exhibit about women in Ecuador and one with photos of Quito. If you really take-in fully each room you would be there all day there is so much content.
  • Interesting place to learn and know how Quito was since the 10000 BC.
  • Incredible place with beautiful things to see. Absolutely worth a visit
  • If you visit Quito, you need to visit Museo de la Ciudad. A place to understand the Ecuadorean culture.
