Museo de la Ciudad, Quito

(4.2/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Perfectly complementing the city's historical hub, Museo de la Ciudad tells the story of Quito and its traditions, legends, and customs through displays of art, maps, and everyday objects. The museum occupies the city's oldest building, originally the San Juan de Dios Hospital, which dates back to the mid 16th century. Journey through the centuries and find out how the lives of the residents of this important trade point were influenced by the exchange of goods, languages, ideas, and beliefs. Inspect dioramas of a typical kitchen, pharmacy, and local shop. The exhibits cover the period from the indigenous people to the arrival of the Spaniards. Two terraces of the adjoined cafe offer a quiet break with a view of the historical part of the city. • The entrance fee is $3. The lower floor is especially about the natives of Quito, their Habitat and their rituals. The texts are in English, but mainly in Spanish. The exhibition is illustrative but simple, simply in that that the information is rather child - or school-compliant. The EC is also a statement on the former Hospital, which has been in this building. There are several exhibition halls, which informs about the life and the changes among other things by the colonization in the 16th 19th century in the upper floor. The lyrics are mostly in Spanish, but the exhibition is very descriptive, with many models, images, and sounds in the background.

  • This museum is inexpensive and gives the history of the area from its earliest origins. However, despite being told otherwise, most of the displays are only in Spanish so we couldn't get as much out o...  more »

  • Incredible place with beautiful things to see. Absolutely worth a visit
  • If you visit Quito, you need to visit Museo de la Ciudad. A place to understand the Ecuadorean culture.
  • Full of history about how an Hospital turned into a Museum
  • 特别棒的一家博物馆,即便在不缺博物馆的基多也是精品,博物馆研究人员在如何组织这个问题上明显下了很大功夫,多视角,多维度显示了基多的前世今生,让人获益匪浅。
  • Good care... If you go to the precise schedules a guide tells you the story of what exhibit, but it is not as much. It is a small place... takes you to how much 1 hour to see all more or less depending on which both you are looking something
