Museo de la Ciudad, Quito

4.4
#8 of 36 in Museums in Quito
Perfectly complementing the city's historical hub, Museo de la Ciudad tells the story of Quito and its traditions, legends, and customs through displays of art, maps, and everyday objects. The museum occupies the city's oldest building, originally the San Juan de Dios Hospital, which dates back to the mid 16th century. Journey through the centuries and find out how the lives of the residents of this important trade point were influenced by the exchange of goods, languages, ideas, and beliefs. Inspect dioramas of a typical kitchen, pharmacy, and local shop. The exhibits cover the period from the indigenous people to the arrival of the Spaniards. Two terraces of the adjoined cafe offer a quiet break with a view of the historical part of the city. This was the second best Museum in Quito after Casa del Alabado. Lots of cool exhibits, a few very cheesy ones, but very worth spending a couple hours in.  more »

Not bad, modern and intetesting muzeum about history of Ecuador. The only problem is that to really enjoy it, you should speak fluently spanish. But for the price 3 $ is really interesting.  more »

It is a beautiful but boring place I made the visit on my own, not guided and thus results little entertaining on Sunday is free.

A great great museum, everything was very very good described and translated. You will learn a lot of Quitos and Ecuadors history. For me it was absolutely great.

Simply put, I loved this museo. It is as the guidebooks say: "worthwhile". It's a mix of taking-you-back dioramas, cool historical facts, excellent art, and some religious paraphernalia. If you've fallen in love with Quito--as my wife and I have in our 6 months here--this is a place to come to to learn more about this incredible, historic city.

Well researched. English-friendly-ish. This is one of the best in Quito.

It's a great place to learn about the history of the city.

Tells the story of Ecuador from before the time of the Incas to the 20th century- very extensive and interesting historical exhibits. They also had a temporary exhibit about women in Ecuador and one with photos of Quito. If you really take-in fully each room you would be there all day there is so much content.
