Ranking as one of the highest statues in the world, La Virgin del Panecillo stands as an aluminum sculpture assembled with more than 7,000 pieces. Built to honor the Virgin Mary, the statue depicts a graceful, serene image complete with wings and floral halo. Since the statue’s completion in 1974, the image has served as an icon of the city and a top sightseeing attraction.   • The statue of the virgin is actually photographed better from a distance. Phots from the base of the statue itself are difficult to get a real perspective other than its size.  more »
  • Going to the top of El Panecillo to see this relatively new statue of the Virgin of over 40 meters is worth de effort. I like the way it is illuminated and the view over the old city.  more »
