Iglesia de La Compania de Jesus, Quito

4.8
#3 of 42 in Historic Sites in Ecuador
Religious Site Architectural Building
Quito's famous Baroque church, Iglesia de La Compania de Jesus dazzles visitors with its golden interior. Dripping with extravagance, the church is adorned head to toe in gold leaf decorations, perhaps explaining why it took 160 years to build. Equally impressive-- though not nearly as golden--the church's symmetrical facade gives visitors a taste of what's to come inside. Have a look at the indigenous Ecuadorian faces depicted subtly on the pillars. Our Quito vacation trip planner makes visiting Iglesia de La Compania de Jesus and other Quito attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Where to stay in Quito

Most visitors to Quito choose to stay in La Mariscal, a touristy neighborhood filled with guesthouses, restaurants, and bars. This area is also the town's nightlife hub, drawing a young crowd of revelers from around the world. If you prefer less noise, look for a bed in La Foresta, a quieter and less crowded alternative just a few blocks away from popular entertainment opportunities. For upscale sleeping options head to the old town, boasting many of Quito's top hotels in some of its prettiest buildings.

  • Simply breathtaking, the intricacy of the carvings inside and out is astounding. Only negative is you cannot take photos inside.  more »
  • The amount of gold adornment is unbelievable. Left behind by Pizzaro's troops as they made their way from Peru to their ships in Panama. Services still continue daily.  more »
