Trip Planner: South America / Ecuador / Pichincha Province / Quito / Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania
Quito's famous Baroque church, Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania dazzles visitors with its golden interior. Dripping with extravagance, the church is adorned head to toe in gold leaf decorations, perhaps explaining why it took 160 years to build. Equally impressive-- though not nearly as golden--the church's symmetrical facade gives visitors a taste of what's to come inside. Have a look at the indigenous Ecuadorian faces depicted subtly on the pillars. There’s a lot of history involved with this church. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures inside the baroque style church inside. But it’s definitely worth a visit. more »
This church is superb ! Yes it costs to enter but I am a firm believer in supporting the art and architecture of old colonial cities I love old Quito and hope to come back Been coming here since..... more »
The detail in all of the gold, silver and wood is simply breathtaking. Definitely a must see if you're in Quito. They do not allow pictures to be taken, which is somewhat a shame, because the world should be able to see the care taken in the creation of this beauty.
It is the summit temple of the Latin American Baroque; built by the Jesuits between 1605 and 1765. The Church of the Company was erected by artists from the Quiteña School, who carved and browned thin 23-carat gold foil each inch of the temple. The Residence of San Ignacio and the Church of the Company Foundation, responsible for the preventive conservation and maintenance of the space invite you to admire the church and to support in the preservation of this cultural legacy.
A marvel of religious art.
