El Panecillo, Quito

4.2
#14 of 181 in Things to do in Quito
For unmatched views of the capital city and its neighboring volcanoes, climb to the top of El Panecillo. The hill stands 200 m (656 ft) high between south and central Quito and comes from volcanic origin. Reach the top by a set of stairs at the end of Calle Garcia Moreno, or opt for a relatively inexpensive cab ride to the summit. Atop the hill, admire the statue of the Virgin of Quito, built between 1955 and 1975. Locals will be quick to inform you that this is the only virgin statue that sports angel wings. • Dear travel friends, we decided to look at this sight. We took the taxi but rather at the beginning of the rise. Paid no more than 2-3 dollars for the trip. Some require much more. Once at the top you have a super view over the city. Admission to be paid nothing, it's free. We decided then to run us down. The trails are very confusing and you will pass between local houses. These are pretty friendly and help you to find the right way. Following, however, we learned that it would be really dangerous. But we have felt nothing of it. In the evening however, a taxi would be certainly more appropriate.

  • I went to bread a Sunday morning, there were many people and the way to get was a little crowded by traffic and the movement of the Center. Close to the viewpoints were frameworks of lights for Christmas, so everything looked a bit cluttered. You can climb to the Virgin, but try not to. There is an area of local food that has tables and chairs to eat. I expected that the view is spectacular, but because the trees throughout the slope of the hill can not see well all over the city below. But I found it interesting to know, especially if you have a couple of free hours.
