El Panecillo, Quito

4.3
#13 of 183 in Things to do in Quito
For unmatched views of the capital city and its neighboring volcanoes, climb to the top of El Panecillo. The hill stands 200 m (656 ft) high between south and central Quito and comes from volcanic origin. Reach the top by a set of stairs at the end of Calle Garcia Moreno, or opt for a relatively inexpensive cab ride to the summit. Atop the hill, admire the statue of the Virgin of Quito, built between 1955 and 1975. Locals will be quick to inform you that this is the only virgin statue that sports angel wings. • A central point to make good photos with the background of Quito. A little tricky out on another path that is not a bus. They should be wifi. Recommended as the first place to visit in Quito.

  • The best thing to reach El Panecillo is take 2 floors with the sightseeing bus city tour. The place has small stands of hot dogs and hamburgers, with a very reasonable price. The most interesting place is the old solar observatory which was there. Few memories of him remain, but it shows its construction.

  • A lovely view of the city from a high point on the hill. You can walk or take a taxi. Dont miss it at night.  more »

  • We got a very beautiful view of the city and the hills from En Panecillo. It is one of the best views of the city. And it's a beautiful statue. They also have handicrafts and some traditional Ecuadorean food being served near the monument.
  • Great view from above, some people say the walking ascent and descent is dangerous because of robbery, but I can't confirm this. There was even police around.
  • A must see in Quito, the best viewpoint of the whole extension of the city, with privileged view of the old town. One of the city most iconic place. You also have a market place with typical food and handicrafts.
  • This place feels like it's not real in many ways, the buildings look a little overdone for historical effect. It has amazing views and a very cool marketplace. It was also where someone tried to steal my Florida Number Plate (Tag)
  • One of the most centric viewpoints in the whole city. Taking the tour inside the huge virgin is amazing, the view is breathtaking. After that you can drink a very cheap and warm "canelazo" with an "empanada de viento".

Where to stay in Quito

Most visitors to Quito choose to stay in La Mariscal, a touristy neighborhood filled with guesthouses, restaurants, and bars. This area is also the town's nightlife hub, drawing a young crowd of revelers from around the world. If you prefer less noise, look for a bed in La Foresta, a quieter and less crowded alternative just a few blocks away from popular entertainment opportunities. For upscale sleeping options head to the old town, boasting many of Quito's top hotels in some of its prettiest buildings.
