For unmatched views of the capital city and its neighboring volcanoes, climb to the top of El Panecillo. The hill stands 200 m (656 ft) high between south and central Quito and comes from volcanic origin. Reach the top by a set of stairs at the end of Calle Garcia Moreno, or opt for a relatively inexpensive cab ride to the summit. Atop the hill, admire the statue of the Virgin of Quito, built between 1955 and 1975. Locals will be quick to inform you that this is the only virgin statue that sports angel wings. The Winged Virgin statue was built in 1976 and is on a hill near the Calle de Ronda. I think you can get in the base and I don't remember if we just didn't have time. There are some tourist and... more »

We definitely enjoyed wondering the streets of Quito, but there was definitely something unique and significant about wondering right around this huge statue of the Virgin Mary. more »

this massive staty is worth a stop. Although erected as late as in 1975, it was designed already back in the 19th century. more »

Beautiful statute. Very stunning views. There are good food stands so you can try a few local dishes. You have to go through some shady neighborhoods to get there, so definitely take a cab.

We visited el Panacillo between Christmas and new year. It was total craziness and chaos. It took 90 minutes by taxi instead of the normal 15 minutes due to traffic. Once up there you have a beautiful view of the city, I think I would have enjoyed it more by day. On the top you'll find several food stands and souvenir stands. You can enter the monument and get even a better view of the city. It is worth visiting, but the monument is better appreciated from the old Town

It has a awesome view

Awesome place to see the entire Quito, especially if it's sunny day. The entrance fee was about 1usd. It's possible to get tour bus to there although we took a hike from Historic Center that took about 30 minutes, on the hill policeman who is patrolling regularly there warned us that it's not the safest neighborhood but we didn't have any problems hiking up and down twice around noon.
