Cathedral of Quito (La Catedral), Quito

4.3
#5 of 12 in Historic Sites in Quito
Feast your eyes on the luxuriously decorated walls and ceiling of Cathedral of Quito (La Catedral). In contrast to its crisp white exterior, the cathedral's insides dazzle with colorful murals, marble columns, and gold decor. Built in the 16th century and damaged by a handful of natural disasters over the years, including a volcano eruption and an earthquake, the cathedral was declared Ecuador's most important Catholic church in 1995. Make the most of the guided tour included in your ticket price. Tours come in Spanish and, depending on the availability of guides, usually in English. • It is the Catholic Church of more hierarchy in Ecuador, its imposing building draws attention to explore the historic and is an invitation to enter and see its interior. There they combine several architectural styles, given that were carried out four reconstructions, because it was affected by several earthquakes over the centuries. If you enter the Cathedral, you can also visit the Capitular Hall and the Archbishop's library.

  • The Cathedral is located in the historical center of Quito, surrounding the plaza of independence. There are various styles such as Baroque and the mudejar and it has an important collection of works of art, paintings and sculptures. You can climb to the Dome where you can have a nice view of the city with a cost extra, since the entrance to the temple is 3 dollars and if we add the dome is 6 dollars. The hours are 9.30 to 17.30 hours as most of the churches and museums of the city. There are guided tours.

  • Interesting Spanish architecture at this church that fronts the main square in the old town.
  • A labyrinth of treasures
  • The view from the towers is worth the visit, be sure to not only go up in the first towers but also up the one in back. For this one you have to follow a wooden path inside the cathedral's roof.
  • Awesome architecture. Definitely worth visiting
  • Inspiring to visit.
