  • Main attractive tourist of Otavalo is its centenary square or Plaza de los Ponchos. Here are concentrated thousands of artisans and merchants who come every day of the week to exhibit their handicrafts, especially Saturdays when the fair extends to surrounding streets because of its magnitude and importance.

  • In the Centre of the town of Otavalo, this square is completely filled with stores that sell souvenirs and handicrafts in wool, leather, fabrics and jewellery. We visited it one day Thursday. There were few tourists. I understand that Saturday is filled, streets are closed and there are more sellers who even come from other countries. While you can haggle, there are prices that are better in Quito. The good news here is that in one place is everything you're looking for a tourist.

  • It is a place where you can find native crafts in the sector. The place, despite not being very broad in days of little influx of tourists can walk with confidence. The products are very beautiful and not so unreasonably high prices.

  • Great handcraft items, very colourful you can really appreciated the indigenous people of Ecuador. Totally recommend it. I also think is one of the largest markets in South America. Opens from Sunday to Sunday
  • There sure is atmosphere, but the place have turned very geared toward tourists. Many of the products are imported and not original and many the booths seem to offer almost the same things. There are local and unique gems, but look carefully. Anyway - seeing the local people is an experience and the market is worth a visit. Prices can be negotiated and 15-20% discount is quite common.
  • This is a must go place while you're in Otavalo, and of your traveling in Equator. There, you'll be able to buy traditional clothing, bags and ponchos. Always ask for a discount in the prices and ask for more than one time...specially if you look a bit "gringo".
  • Going to this plaza, u r going to spend money on beautiful hand made products that are authentic. I liked it that you can always negotiate prices and get a deal on products. They sell the softest alpaca covers perfect for winters in NYC. Softer then cashmere at a fraction of the price.
  • A great market to wander around in. If you go on Wednesdays or Saturdays the market spills out into the street for about five blocks around the square. It's truly amazing to stroll around eating some local food and taking a look at the local artists. True, like any big market you will find a lot of the same stuff being sold at a lot of the vendors. And a lot is made in China not locally made. But if you spend the time you can find some great items. As with any place a lot of people gather at you need to keep an eye on your valuables. It's pretty safe, but there are more then a few pick pockets amongst the crowd.

Where to stay in Otavalo

With the market town's growing international reputation, good quality accommodations have cropped up in Otavalo in recent years to meet the boom in tourism. Choose between characterful posadas (guesthouses) offering simple rooms in rustic buildings, or opt for one of the slightly larger hotels. Book early to avoid disappointment, given the relative lack of rooms available; alternatively, consider staying in Ibarra to the north, where the choice of lodgings is far greater.
