Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador

Mountain Nature / Park
Experienced climbers and adventurous sightseers flock to Mount Chimborazo for its sweeping snowcapped vistas. Once considered the highest mountain on earth at 6,268 m (20,564 ft) before being eclipsed by the Himalayas, the peak nonetheless represents the farthest point from the earth's center, thanks to a geological bulge. Ascending to the top is a task for experienced climbers only, and be aware that supplies, correct clothing, and plenty of rest are all essential. Those who don't want to make the strenuous climb can also take a car and then walk up to the second refuge for an excellent vantage point of the surrounding vista. Venturing beyond that point requires you to have a guide. Using our custom trip planner, Quito attractions like Mount Chimborazo can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • We were here! The highest mountain in the world! Measured from the Earth's Center. The Park is well laid out and maintained! The streets are well designed and leads up to 4800 meters height! There's a small kitchen and the ability to pick up a stamp for the Passport! As a further challenge, you can test its physical border (mortals) and ascend to a further hut at 5020 metres on foot! Since then, deadline is for normal people! But, you are rewarded with an unforgettable view!

  • We stayed the night in riobamba, then got a 7.30am bus from the main bus terminal towards guaranda ($2.50). You just ask the driver to drop you off at the entrance to Chimborazo. Admission was free. I...  more »
  • When we went to the Chimborazo we wanted to see snow. We are lucky to have a clear day, and there was snow just a few meters from the first shelter. My recommendation is go up to refuge in car down the windows and not wrap until you reach the parking area. It helps to take a deep breath. You must be adequately prepared for the weather with gloves, scarf, hat and a good coat. Do not you trust if the climate in Riobamba is tempered, up long ago cold. After warm remember walk slowly. Ten candies and water. It is important to stay hydrated. In the refuge have a warm place where to sit or go to the bathroom and a cafeteria offering hot drinks (tea, hot chocolate, coffee) and pies, donuts and products packaged like cookies or chocolates. You can also find souvenirs and accessories for the cold. Have your camera ready for pictures!

Where to stay in Quito

Most visitors to Quito choose to stay in La Mariscal, a touristy neighborhood filled with guesthouses, restaurants, and bars. This area is also the town's nightlife hub, drawing a young crowd of revelers from around the world. If you prefer less noise, look for a bed in La Foresta, a quieter and less crowded alternative just a few blocks away from popular entertainment opportunities. For upscale sleeping options head to the old town, boasting many of Quito's top hotels in some of its prettiest buildings.
