Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador
(4.7/5 based on 70+ reviews on the web)
Experienced climbers and adventurous sightseers flock to Mount Chimborazo for its sweeping snowcapped vistas. Once considered the highest mountain on earth at 6,268 m (20,564 ft) before being eclipsed by the Himalayas, the peak nonetheless represents the farthest point from the earth's center, thanks to a geological bulge. Ascending to the top is a task for experienced climbers only, and be aware that supplies, correct clothing, and plenty of rest are all essential. Those who don't want to make the strenuous climb can also take a car and then walk up to the second refuge for an excellent vantage point of the surrounding vista. Venturing beyond that point requires you to have a guide. Using our custom trip planner, Quito attractions like Mount Chimborazo can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • We drove there in a small coach. The scenery changed from verdant to moonlike as we got closer and higher. We entered the national park where we found welcome and clean toilets. We set off to try and ...  more »
  • The starting point is the rifugio Carrel (4800 meters) accessible by normal car, you pay an entrance fee to the Park. At the moment I am writing this review on refuge Whymper was completely rebuilt but is not yet ready. Chimborazo is the highest peak of Ecuador and is the point on land farthest from its Centre, also of Mount Everest. From the car park to 4860 m you pass behind the rifugio Carrel and trail you reach the refuge Whymper to 5000 m Leaving the shelter right continue on track until you start climbing towards the left where the snow. It quickly becomes steep, you pass under the rock wall del Castillo (falling stones) to the right and then the left door on the crest. After Castillo you can easily find a steep ice wall. On the Ridge always per track climb to zig zag to the cumbre Veintimilla and from there on a broad plateau until around 40 metres higher Maxima cumbre.

  • Is a mountain very enormous and filled with ice on the tip but it would go very well sheltered because it is too cold there will many tourists recommend much :)
