Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador

(4.7/5 based on 75+ reviews on the web)
Experienced climbers and adventurous sightseers flock to Mount Chimborazo for its sweeping snowcapped vistas. Once considered the highest mountain on earth at 6,268 m (20,564 ft) before being eclipsed by the Himalayas, the peak nonetheless represents the farthest point from the earth's center, thanks to a geological bulge. Ascending to the top is a task for experienced climbers only, and be aware that supplies, correct clothing, and plenty of rest are all essential. Those who don't want to make the strenuous climb can also take a car and then walk up to the second refuge for an excellent vantage point of the surrounding vista. Venturing beyond that point requires you to have a guide. Using our custom trip planner, Quito attractions like Mount Chimborazo can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • You can drive to around 16,000 whereupon you hike the last 600 feet up to the upper refuge. Though its then only 4,000 feet to the summit, it seems further. We had a pretty strong group but ran into t...  more »
  • Magnificent landscape; Imposing volcano; At 5000 meters altitude the beginning of the climb is difficult, with a steep path and that requires great physical and mental preparation. Well worth a visit.  more »
