If you are looking for a school to learn Spanish, I recommend Montañita Spanish School. I followed 11 weeks of courses there and I wish I could stay longer! The school is excellent. The teachers are friendly and very competent. If you wish, you can also surf and yoga courses. If you re looking for a school to learn Spanish, I recommend Montañita Spanish School. The MSS is a super school and well situated in Montanita. The teachers are all super friendly, helpful and well organized. Even the interns and the other employees are constantly on site and assist one if you have any questions. I lived in the cabins of the school four weeks and can only recommend. The rooms were clean and I felt safe! The activities organized by the school were funny and short-term changes were communicated or each were no problem.

We prepaid for Spanish lessons. We couldn't attend the some lessons, so they told our teacher that she wasn't getting paid because we didn't go to the lessons and hadn't paid...even though we pre-paid. We asked for our money back for the sum of the lessons that we couldn't attend, but we were told no, they had already given the money to the teacher...which was obviously a lie, they hadn't paid the teacher at all

My wife and I spent a week at the school. The school itself is pretty good, on par with some of the better ones we did (more than 10 so far). The teachers are good, the setting is nice and the staff is helpful. What sets this school apart from the other we've been to is the small beach town of Montanita. While the town itself is known for surfing, hanging on the beach and "hippy" attitude, the school offers a balance of at least a few hours a day of "productive" time. Also, the school is affiliated with the Cabanias, a hostel/lodge that offers an oasis away from the hustle of the small village. The school offers surfing classes which we did not participate in and some other activities. While most of the students are in the 20s there are a few older ones to make a balance :)

I would recommend this school to everybody. I stayed here for 4 weeks and it was such a great time. Spanish teachers are very professional and besides that very friendly. Besides Spanish classes I took surf classes and it is a great combination of studying and having fun in the water. Many activities are organized apart from the Spanish and surf classes, this makes you really feel like you are part of one big family. I stayed at the accommodation of the school 'Montañita Cabañas'. This is where almost all the students stay and it is a little paradise!

Where to stay in Montanita

The laid-back, hippyish coastal town of Montanita once offered only a few fishermen huts and surfer tents, making staying here appeal only to young, in-the-know backpackers and water sports enthusiasts. Nowadays, though the town maintains its countercultural charm, a good set of accommodations has sprung up to make the destination suitable for a broader range of tourists. Large resort-style hotels and upmarket boutique hotels cling to the beach areas, while simpler high-rise hotels cluster around the main Ruta del Sol road. Budget hostels provide a good option for travelers wishing to tap into the rustic roots of the place, offering simple rooms in characterful lodgings. However, Montanita no longer sits on the list of "off-the-beaten-track" destinations, so advance reservations in this modestly proportioned town are a must.
