Puerta de la Ciudad, Loja

4.6
#1 of 6 in Sightseeing in Loja
Architectural Building Historic Site
Charged with the task of being the city's first impression, Puerta de la Ciudad gallantly greets visitors with its arched doorway and two imposing turrets. This castlelike entrance welcomes visitors on the main street, guarding the central plazas that can be found just inside. The castle gate houses an art museum that focuses on modern expression of local identity. Throughout the museum you'll also find an archeology gallery with tools and weapons belonging to pre-Hispanic cultures, a cafeteria, craft store, and vantage points overlooking the city. • Is amazing here, especially at night; where lighting makes it more special. It is a monument city, public access is free. It has an exhibition hall, a small museum; at the top there is a cafeteria, where is the food Ok, rather than all traditional dishes (tamales, humitas). The view from the tower is incredible, as rivers, forest corridors and the Esplanade of the city themselves. This on one of the bridges most ancient of the city, the bridge bolivar, in fact around the gate of the city, are a few busts of illustrious men. It is quite enlightened and safe. It is one of my favorite places in the city, always I have time going over there.

  • It is located in a striking Castle gate, by which vehicles that enter the city and cross the rio Malacatos, with the feeling of that enter a medieval world. While the castle is a construction, it is a striking detail upon entering the city. Inside the Castle, there is a large art gallery, a store of handcrafts, as well as a lookout on one of the towers of the same, where you can see part of the city and Rio Malacatos.

Where to stay in Loja

The center of Loja provides a good set of accommodations, located either side of the arterial road, Avenida Universitaria. Mid-range and luxury hotels offer various amenities, including pools, onsite restaurants, and swanky bars. Budget-conscious visitors will want to explore the side streets of the central areas and outskirts, where formerly residential buildings have transformed into guesthouses, simple hotels, and hostels. The Nueva Granada district in the city's north provides both boutique hotels and hostels, whose proximity to Highway 35 makes them a good choice for those wanting to get out into the rural areas.
