Laguna Quilotoa, Latacunga
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Laguna Quilotoa features a stunning lake situated in a volcanic crater. The 3 km (1.8 mile) wide caldera was formed by an enormous eruption in 1280, which collapsed the volcano. Take in the scenery during the drive to the small town and the summit, where--besides the lake--you can see the surrounding mountains, and even the active Cotopaxi volcano. You can hike around the rim of the crater, or take the trail down to the caldera to better appreciate the 250 m (820 ft) deep lake and its vibrant emerald color. Just remember that the hike back up is a strenuous vertical climb that takes a couple of hours and requires a certain amount of fitness. Make Laguna Quilotoa a centerpiece of your Latacunga vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Latacunga travel itinerary maker.
