Laguna Quilotoa, Latacunga

(4.8/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Laguna Quilotoa features a stunning lake situated in a volcanic crater. The 3 km (1.8 mile) wide caldera was formed by an enormous eruption in 1280, which collapsed the volcano. Take in the scenery during the drive to the small town and the summit, where--besides the lake--you can see the surrounding mountains, and even the active Cotopaxi volcano. You can hike around the rim of the crater, or take the trail down to the caldera to better appreciate the 250 m (820 ft) deep lake and its vibrant emerald color. Just remember that the hike back up is a strenuous vertical climb that takes a couple of hours and requires a certain amount of fitness. Make Laguna Quilotoa a centerpiece of your Latacunga vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Latacunga travel itinerary maker.

  • I visited the Quilotoa lagoon for the holiday of Carnival, on that day if there were enough visitors. The view is beautiful, the truth never found the Shalala viewpoint, I asked many people and didn't know me tell where was, long cold, although various day. BE PENDING FROM THAT. They can go down to the Lake and kayaking, bottlenose offer up at a cost of $12-$15. They will have several hours to enjoy als walk and the environment. There is a restaurant in front of the road. 5 minutes walk is a small craft market well nice and well-arranged.

  • I recommend it completely, a full day just to be able to contemplate the elegance of the colors of the lagoon in combination with the experience of walking to almost 4000masl. Rains that accompany your walk, if you feel that it is very difficult to move forward are shuttle services at horse. Try as far as possible of descending towards the same lagoon arriesgate to go little beyond the viewpoint, to steady pace takes you 1 hour descend and 1.5horas to climb. I recommend carrying little luggage and a bottle of water is enough to not make your journey too heavy, and the indispensable requirement take camera! Enjoy it!

  • Definitely needs to be on your itinerary. Beautiful atmosphere - bring a camera and sturdy shoes to hike down. The hike up isn't too bad but you can always hire a mule to get back up if needed.  more »
