Sierra Negra, Isabela
(4.3/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
See the aftermath of recent lava flows at Sierra Negra, where the caldera ranks as the largest volcano on the Galápagos Islands. Since its last eruption in 2005, the shield volcano has continued to release heat and gases, without any major events. Take a guided tour to the volcano to learn about the geological phenomena that created it. If you put your hands over a hole in the mountainside, you'll feel the geothermal heat radiating from beneath the surface. Wear boots for the journey, as you might have to trek through deep mud on the way up. Put Sierra Negra on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Puerto Villamil trip generator.

  • Use clothes and shoes suitable for a long walk and don't be afraid to get dirty. Use sunscreen. The place is beautiful! Many plants, flowers and birds along the way. Excerpts of ascent and descents that require care. Later, the landscape is amazing. Volcanic lava tunnels, some cactus and craters. From the top you can see the sea.

  • I did a walk to get to the top of the Sierra Negra volcano... they are several hours by it is advisable to carry water and sunscreen... lots of vegetation and beautiful views... impressive dimension of the crater of the volcano. Ideal for photographing. View other minor volcanoes...
