Sierra Negra, Isabela

(4.3/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
See the aftermath of recent lava flows at Sierra Negra, where the caldera ranks as the largest volcano on the Galápagos Islands. Since its last eruption in 2005, the shield volcano has continued to release heat and gases, without any major events. Take a guided tour to the volcano to learn about the geological phenomena that created it. If you put your hands over a hole in the mountainside, you'll feel the geothermal heat radiating from beneath the surface. Wear boots for the journey, as you might have to trek through deep mud on the way up. Put Sierra Negra on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Puerto Villamil trip generator.

  • Nice to have the largest active volcano in the world to have climbed. But what a bad Guide. He could not speak English, but wanted it or something. His name was Wilbert according to me and is with me on number 1 worst guide of all time. Outside the crater to see any wildlife oid. It means so just 16 km walking without any information. Of course, particular to have been, but I hope that the Guide fired word.

  • Great about 16 km to the crater Chico walk - over on the Sierra Negra landscape. Bring sturdy footwear and water! And don't forget the camera! It pays to make the tour - can be booked at short notice on the spot! About $40 per person
