Sierra Negra, Isabela

(4.3/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
See the aftermath of recent lava flows at Sierra Negra, where the caldera ranks as the largest volcano on the Galápagos Islands. Since its last eruption in 2005, the shield volcano has continued to release heat and gases, without any major events. Take a guided tour to the volcano to learn about the geological phenomena that created it. If you put your hands over a hole in the mountainside, you'll feel the geothermal heat radiating from beneath the surface. Wear boots for the journey, as you might have to trek through deep mud on the way up. Put Sierra Negra on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Puerto Villamil trip generator.

  • We booked this tour in Puerto Villamil. With the bus, we were driven to the starting point. Then we hiked 2 hours to the crater up and down. We had weather luck and great views over the area. The way back was then pretty hot to much water, bring!

  • We hike to the second crater, 11 miles. The fog lifted at the first crater and we had beautiful views. Lots of flowers on the hike. This was a highlight. The first part of the hike to the picnic area ...  more »
  • Very impressive to see this magnificent caldera and the lava flow. Fairly short but often steep hike to the top, and can be made into a 5-mile loop. It was intensely sunny and hot the day we went ther...  more »
