Where to stay in Cuenca

Extremely popular with international visitors and expats, Cuenca features the sizeable range of hotel options you might expect from a renowned tourist destination. Scores of hotels and bed and breakfasts line the streets of the city's old town, many of them occupying historic mansions and homes restored to their former glory. The larger, more upscale hotels in the city center tend to offer onsite restaurants and other amenities, while cheaper hostels feature little more than bunk beds in exchange for much lower rates. However, keep in mind that Cuenca's popularity has a flip side, as the large foreign presence makes for higher prices than elsewhere in Ecuador and also large fluctuations in cost depending on the season.

  • even though I didn't get to see the second floor I was impressed with the coin museum Plus it's free. Good place to visit
  • Great place to see local ruins and art while in Cuenca. It seemed like some of the exhibits were closed when I visited but I was still able to see a lot. The grounds behind the museum are the real prize and encompass a lot of different things in about a 45 minute walk. You begin at the ruins and make your way to the gardens and finally end up at a beautiful bird display. A must visit location in Cuenca.
  • Good parking and great free events
  • This is a free museum which is nice but I got to say none of the displays really grabbed me. It gives information on various ethnic groups and their history. If that interests you you'll probably enjoy it a lot.
  • Free, somewhat limited exhibitions. More pieces needed to be labelled
