Take an extensive tour through Ecuador's indigenous history at Museo de las Culturas Aborigenes. The museum displays over 5,000 archaeological artifacts from 20 distinct pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures--some dating back 15,000 years. Bring your visit alive with detailed stories on a guided tour in English; especially informative are the observations into pre-Inca vanity, with a number of combs and obsidian mirrors used as evidence. Look out for the striking designs of the cooking equipment. Take a break to digest everything you've learned with a hot drink out in the tranquil and scenic courtyard. Where to stay in Cuenca

Extremely popular with international visitors and expats, Cuenca features the sizeable range of hotel options you might expect from a renowned tourist destination. Scores of hotels and bed and breakfasts line the streets of the city's old town, many of them occupying historic mansions and homes restored to their former glory. The larger, more upscale hotels in the city center tend to offer onsite restaurants and other amenities, while cheaper hostels feature little more than bunk beds in exchange for much lower rates. However, keep in mind that Cuenca's popularity has a flip side, as the large foreign presence makes for higher prices than elsewhere in Ecuador and also large fluctuations in cost depending on the season.

  • You might miss this small museum from the street, but it's worth a look. It cost $3 or $4 to go through, and they have an interesting collection of indigenous pottery and tools. There is also a manuscript room on site that would be useful if you are interested in cultural research. The pieces are predominately Ecuadorian, and range in eras from various regions and cultures of the country. They provide a limited, but helpful exhibit guide, available in several languages. Theres a nice gift shop and small cafe on the site as well.
  • What a beautiful place! The only museum I would enjoy visiting again. The owner is a beautiful and charming lady, which adds to the charm of the place. I fell in love with a painting in that museum!!! :)
  • Cool museum that has a wide collection of items representing aboriginal tribes that lived in Ecuador. There's an english guide to follow to learn about this history.
  • Extrordinary collection of lithic, ceramic and metal artifacts from precolombian cultures. Friendly staff and interesting gift shop. Well worth your time and a very small admission fee.
  • Incredible! Most impressive collection of pre-Columbian art imaginable. Over a thousand pieces on display of wide ranging diversity and high quality.
