Museo Catedral Vieja, Cuenca
(4.5/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Appreciate a well-maintained collection of religious art at Museo Catedral Vieja. Constructed in the 16th century, the old cathedral of Cuenca served for around 400 years as the city's principal place of worship, before being superceded by a new cathedral in 1975. Extensive renovations transformed the cathedral into a museum, which today displays paintings, sculptures, and artifacts of religious significance. Look for the large wooden model that depicts the new cathedral in impressive detail. • This Cathedral has seen over the years from the Foundation of cuenca, created in the year 1573 with its 4 chapels. It is very beautiful. Photos without flash are allowed. You can see changes that has suffered due to the restorations. It has a crafts shop and a cafe-restaurant. The price of admission is $1 for $2 for foreigners and Ecuadorians.

  • This is also called the "Old Church" and is unfortunately not been restored or repaired as it should have been. Let's hope funds become available. The museum itself is just OK, but probably not worth ...  more »
  • Beautiful old church in front of the new Cathedral. Interior designed as a museum. Represented a "last supper" with wooden figurines.

  • This is the New Cathedral (official name: Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción). Its towers are truncated due to a calculation error of the architect. If they had been raised to their planned height, the foundation of this church to the Immaculate Conception, would not have been able to bear the weight. In spite of the architect's immense mistake, the New Cathedral of Cuenca is a monumental work of faith that began to be built in 1880. It is in Neo-Gothic style, and its blue and white domes have become a symbol for the city. Its facade is made of alabaster and local marble, while the floor is covered with pink marble, brought from Carrara (Italy). When the Cathedral was first constructed 9,000 out of Cuenca's 10,000 inhabitants could fit in the building.
  • Beautiful cathedral
  • Totally worth visiting
  • Almost 200 years in its construction and it wasn't finished. =
