Museo Catedral Vieja, Cuenca

4.5
#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Cuenca
Appreciate a well-maintained collection of religious art at Museo Catedral Vieja. Constructed in the 16th century, the old cathedral of Cuenca served for around 400 years as the city's principal place of worship, before being superceded by a new cathedral in 1975. Extensive renovations transformed the cathedral into a museum, which today displays paintings, sculptures, and artifacts of religious significance. Look for the large wooden model that depicts the new cathedral in impressive detail. • Simplicity and history described here which equal or better how it is currently should be kept. Stunning works of art in its interior. Speaks from the heart of the city and how important that is for their people.

  • Very interesting museum representing catholic's beliefs. I was lucky enough to see the orchestra rehearsing on that day. There's a coffee and souvenirs shop inside it.
  • More entertaining than the new one. Check the side rooms and go up!
  • Lots of amazing historical facts about the city and the cathedrals.
  • This is the New Cathedral (official name: Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción). Its towers are truncated due to a calculation error of the architect. If they had been raised to their planned height, the foundation of this church to the Immaculate Conception, would not have been able to bear the weight. In spite of the architect's immense mistake, the New Cathedral of Cuenca is a monumental work of faith that began to be built in 1880. It is in Neo-Gothic style, and its blue and white domes have become a symbol for the city. Its facade is made of alabaster and local marble, while the floor is covered with pink marble, brought from Carrara (Italy). When the Cathedral was first constructed 9,000 out of Cuenca's 10,000 inhabitants could fit in the building.

Where to stay in Cuenca

Extremely popular with international visitors and expats, Cuenca features the sizeable range of hotel options you might expect from a renowned tourist destination. Scores of hotels and bed and breakfasts line the streets of the city's old town, many of them occupying historic mansions and homes restored to their former glory. The larger, more upscale hotels in the city center tend to offer onsite restaurants and other amenities, while cheaper hostels feature little more than bunk beds in exchange for much lower rates. However, keep in mind that Cuenca's popularity has a flip side, as the large foreign presence makes for higher prices than elsewhere in Ecuador and also large fluctuations in cost depending on the season.
