Inmaculada Concepción Cathedral, Cuenca

Categories: Architectural Buildings, Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web
A fusion of architectural styles, Inmaculada Concepción Cathedral stands as a towering landmark visible from all over town. Constructed over a period of nearly 100 years and finished only in 1975, the cathedral features Romanesque Revival, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic elements. Marvel at its trio of powder-blue domes, covered in imported blue and white glazed tiles, and get a good look at the intricate facade. Head inside to enjoy its vaulted interior lavishly decorated with gold and marble accents. Note that the building's blue domes appear disproportionately small; an architectural flaw required a downsizing of the overly heavy features so as not to collapse the structure. • Of course nice to visit, if you have the chance climb the stairs for a vieuw of the city of Cuenca. For me walking in the city, enjoy a coffee at a terasse is the way to enjoy the city.
  • The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, or new Cathedral presents different types of Romanesque architecture and is crowned by three giant domes covered by celestial blue tiles that impact and Marvel from the angle that divises them. Its construction began in 1885 and lasted for a century. It is worth to revel in this gem.

  • A vast architectural work, with many altars and spectacular décor. Presents from outside imposing doors with their respective entries, and highlighted the domes of blue roofs on the outside. Don't miss the ascent to the domes from where you have a beautiful view of much of the city.

  • Beautiful inside and out! Head inside to the information desk to buy a $2 ticket to access a viewing point to see the domes, otherwise some equally nice views can be seen from the surrounding streets
  • This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in South America. I lived in Cuenca Ecuador for several months and would frequent the cathedral and just marvel at its beauty. It is across the plaza from the old cathedral. Cuenca Ecuador is a wonderful place to visit. The climate is extraordinary.
