Inmaculada Concepción Cathedral, Cuenca

4.7
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Cuenca
A fusion of architectural styles, Inmaculada Concepción Cathedral stands as a towering landmark visible from all over town. Constructed over a period of nearly 100 years and finished only in 1975, the cathedral features Romanesque Revival, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic elements. Marvel at its trio of powder-blue domes, covered in imported blue and white glazed tiles, and get a good look at the intricate facade. Head inside to enjoy its vaulted interior lavishly decorated with gold and marble accents. Note that the building's blue domes appear disproportionately small; an architectural flaw required a downsizing of the overly heavy features so as not to collapse the structure. The Cathedral is tells us that it is relatively new, is very high and well accomplished in its details. The main altar is awesome

I'm not a particular fan of churches, but this Cathedral with its domes and stained-glass Windows has impressed me. Costs no admission, so just take a look into it!

It really is a beautiful structure. Before I leave I fully intend to visit properly, rather than just walk around the outside.

Where to stay in Cuenca

Extremely popular with international visitors and expats, Cuenca features the sizeable range of hotel options you might expect from a renowned tourist destination. Scores of hotels and bed and breakfasts line the streets of the city's old town, many of them occupying historic mansions and homes restored to their former glory. The larger, more upscale hotels in the city center tend to offer onsite restaurants and other amenities, while cheaper hostels feature little more than bunk beds in exchange for much lower rates. However, keep in mind that Cuenca's popularity has a flip side, as the large foreign presence makes for higher prices than elsewhere in Ecuador and also large fluctuations in cost depending on the season.
