Pick up a woven straw hat and tour a hat museum at Homero Ortega, a manufacturer the famous Panama hats. Made from a specific type of palm frond that only grows on the coast of Ecuador, some Panama-type hats can take up to six months to make and can cost several hundred dollars. At this site, you can visit a workshop to learn about the complex production process and check out the museum charting the history of hats, presented through an array of tools, artifacts, and old photographs. • They were very helpful in giving us the tour of the history and process of Panama hats. Then you can go to the store and buying their products

  • The location is a bit off the beaten track, but worth the price of a cab. The tour is short and quite interesting. The showroom is very busy with a nice selection of hats finished on-site.  more »
  • The hats are gorgeous. Didível to choose only one. The site is easy, pleasant location to visit (there are demonstrations of how to make the hat), impeccable service, with the cafeteria on the second floor with nice view and little drink.

  • You get to see how the hats are made from raw materials to the really fine quality finished products. Very interesting.
  • Very interesting. Well implemented facilities to visit. The guide was the granddaughter of the duel of the company and knew the script well. Very nice shop

Where to stay in Cuenca

Extremely popular with international visitors and expats, Cuenca features the sizeable range of hotel options you might expect from a renowned tourist destination. Scores of hotels and bed and breakfasts line the streets of the city's old town, many of them occupying historic mansions and homes restored to their former glory. The larger, more upscale hotels in the city center tend to offer onsite restaurants and other amenities, while cheaper hostels feature little more than bunk beds in exchange for much lower rates. However, keep in mind that Cuenca's popularity has a flip side, as the large foreign presence makes for higher prices than elsewhere in Ecuador and also large fluctuations in cost depending on the season.
