Pick up a woven straw hat and tour a hat museum at Homero Ortega, a manufacturer the famous Panama hats. Made from a specific type of palm frond that only grows on the coast of Ecuador, some Panama-type hats can take up to six months to make and can cost several hundred dollars. At this site, you can visit a workshop to learn about the complex production process and check out the museum charting the history of hats, presented through an array of tools, artifacts, and old photographs. • We have not been very pleased with the visit which was botched. Then towards the store, to sell their hats, very expensive! but of very good quality. Not for all budgets! We found the hats in a small street very nice and not expensive at all.

Where to stay in Cuenca

Extremely popular with international visitors and expats, Cuenca features the sizeable range of hotel options you might expect from a renowned tourist destination. Scores of hotels and bed and breakfasts line the streets of the city's old town, many of them occupying historic mansions and homes restored to their former glory. The larger, more upscale hotels in the city center tend to offer onsite restaurants and other amenities, while cheaper hostels feature little more than bunk beds in exchange for much lower rates. However, keep in mind that Cuenca's popularity has a flip side, as the large foreign presence makes for higher prices than elsewhere in Ecuador and also large fluctuations in cost depending on the season.
