Cotopaxi National Park, Cotopaxi Province

(4.6/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
Explore the 33,393 hectares (82,516 acres) of Cotopaxi National Park, centered on an eponymous volcano and sheltering Andean wolves, llamas, deer, pumas, and a vast array of birds. Hike through the humid mountain forest at low elevations and the snowy reaches of the hills surrounding the volcano, which saw its last significant eruption in 1904. Periods of heightened seismic activity--such as in late 2015--can result in restricted access to the park, so be sure to check with local authorities before planning your trip. • The Cotopaxi National Park is a nature reserve at 1 hour and a half from Quito. The road is excellent up to the entrance to the Park. In the reserve you can meet several sites such as lakes and archaeological sites. But the biggest attraction on the volcano Cotopaxi, which can be accessed truck road unpaved until a point. From here go up stepped around 45 min to a refuge. Depending on the season you can see snow from below where the cars are left and throughout the tour. In summer the snow is more scarce. The landscape is very cute and the encounter with nature, is an unforgettable experience. Recommended for all types of people with good physical capacity suitable for children and adults.

  • Much to do but best to start at interpretation centre. Guides really essential to give context. Truly a different experience. Plan for a whole day visit. The walk up to the José Rivas Refuge is stunni...  more »
  • I was glad we had a driver and guide. Would be very hard to see the highlights without a guide. Roads are very rough and weather can be very cold.  more »

  • The views are insane. The volcano is beautiful. It's amazing how something so devastating can be so beautiful
  • Inpresive! Magical , amazing everything you can imagine in a same place. I loved it!
  • Even with the summit to Cotapaxi closed because of the recent volcanic activity, the National Park is breathtaking! The mirror lake, wild horses, deer, and unique flora make for a memorable visit. Cycling tours are available and the local guides are super knowledgeable and kind. Do walk with a photocopy of the ID page of your passport as this info is needed for National Park statistics. This is a must visit!
  • Beautiful landscapes. A great place to encounter nature! Love it!
  • This place has a great view. The trek is not that hard. We did cycling on our way down the mountain which was amazing
