Cotopaxi National Park, Cotopaxi Province
(4.6/5 based on 360 reviews on the web)
Explore the 33,393 hectares (82,516 acres) of Cotopaxi National Park, centered on an eponymous volcano and sheltering Andean wolves, llamas, deer, pumas, and a vast array of birds. Hike through the humid mountain forest at low elevations and the snowy reaches of the hills surrounding the volcano, which saw its last significant eruption in 1904. Periods of heightened seismic activity--such as in late 2015--can result in restricted access to the park, so be sure to check with local authorities before planning your trip. • we did this excursion on our own. Thanks to tripadvisor and some other blogs it was really easy and I can only encourage others to do it like we did. Tour operators charge for 2 people from 80-110 USD...  more »
  • Cotopaxi is one of the volcanoes most important of the Ecuador, his visit is magical, it allows to do a short trail to the shelter but very hard because of the altitude, take it easy, you Ascend up to 4800 meters of height, then you can make the descent by bike. The area is pure vulcanology with different eruptive stratum.

  • I visited the Cotopaxi National Park - or at least its usual portion in sightseeing - from Quito. So I made the trip with a private carrier. First recommendation, leave everything as early as possible to reach the entrance at 8 in the morning, that will ensure better climate - to day runs the risk that the cloudiness covers the volcano is greater. Second recommendation, go well sheltered, wear including waterproof clothing. If something you forgot, in the visitor centre craft stalls you may purchase outerwear. Third recommendation, take some of food with sugar and lots of fluids to alleviate altitude sickness if it is that there has been no prior acclimatization. Moreover, the visit follow a standard script: after stopping at the reception centre, visit the Limpiopungo lagoon and later, after leaving the vehicle in the parking lot, José Rivas gets to the refuge. When the weather's nice, the views are unimaginable, both in the landscape of the lagoon as the views from the refuge.

  • The views are insane. The volcano is beautiful. It's amazing how something so devastating can be so beautiful
  • Inpresive! Magical , amazing everything you can imagine in a same place. I loved it!
  • Even with the summit to Cotapaxi closed because of the recent volcanic activity, the National Park is breathtaking! The mirror lake, wild horses, deer, and unique flora make for a memorable visit. Cycling tours are available and the local guides are super knowledgeable and kind. Do walk with a photocopy of the ID page of your passport as this info is needed for National Park statistics. This is a must visit!
  • Beautiful landscapes. A great place to encounter nature! Love it!
  • This place has a great view. The trek is not that hard. We did cycling on our way down the mountain which was amazing
